Walk vs. Car Rental in Boulder

We are headed to Boulder in July for a vacation sans children! My husbands's all time favorite beer is Hazed and Infused, a trip to Boulder Brewing Company has inspired our trip. We plan to fly into Denver and we have reservations at the Quality Inn in Boulder. We are wondering if we should get a shuttle from Denver to Boulder and then walk everywhere we want to go.Is that possible or is it too far?(Quality Inn does off bike rentals.) Or should we rent a car out of Denver? Or perhaps we get shuttled to Boulder and then rent a car out of Boulder. We plan to visit Pearl Street, tour some breweries and perhaps explore some canyons. Any input would be appreciated!

Rent a car. While Boulder is pedestrian and bike friendly, if you plan to venture outside of the city and "explore some canyons" you need a car. It's a couple of miles from the Quality Inn to Boulder Brewing Co. and it can be pretty hot in July.

And with that rental car, you might want to plan a day trip to Rocky Mountain National Park. It is about 90 minutes up Boulder Canyon (119) to Nederland and on to Estes Park by way of the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway (72 & 7). For the return trip you could either take highway 7 to Lyons which travels through very pretty South St. Vrain Canyon or highway 34 from Estes to Loveland down dramatic Big Thompson Canyon.

You are probably referring to Eldorado Canyon State Park and Golden Gate Canyon State Park.

As noted, you will dramatically enhance your vacation with a car to explore around a bit. There is so much you can see up in the mountains within an hour. I'm also guessing it will be cheaper than shuttling/taxis, etc. if you shop the rental car a bit.

Have fun.
