Early Season Conditions

Any views on what conditions are like during the New Year holiday period? Considering booking a week during that time. Many thanks for your thoughts.

New Year is not "early" season in the Sierras!!! Expect plenty of snow, and probably snowy conditions. If you hire a car out of Reno, be sure to get an all-wheel drive.

The conditions are shaping up to be great. We should be expecting the first snow fall within the next few weeks.....then it's a guess when the heavy stuff hits. Here's a great new site with solid weather data for squaw valley. It's more of a real-time weather "dashboard" but will give you an idea what is happening.

The site is new and the locals who run it are hungry for visitors so if you post a comment in the forum or info areas I can assure you they'll give you good advice:

Last year it looked like the conditions at new years would be great because there was plenty of snow. Unfortunately over the Christmas break it rained a bunch and affected the quality and amount of snow. Hope it's better this year. There were days on the north shore of Tahoe when there was no power and it was overall pitiful.
