How much time driving from Sonoma to SFO on Fri afternoon?

We have some flexibility in our schedule , want to take 3pm or 5pm flight out of SFO on Fri 1/10. Will be driving from Sonoma area...wondering how much time to allow, have read traffic is a problem. Would the earlier flight at 3 be easier? Many thanks for any thoughts.

Yes - 3 p.m is easier

I was up in Sonoma last week and tried to leave about 3:30 - it was gridlock.....getting onto the freeway.

Earlier in the day no problem.

Your other option of course is to still do the 5 p.m. flight and perhaps have a late lunch in San Francisco and be on your way by 3:00 to the airport from San Francisco.

I'd be interested to know mini's route from Sonoma since she lives in Fremont, which is 40 miles southeast of SF. Her route is undoubtedly different than what would generally be the recommended one from Sonoma to SF and then on to SFO.

Generally Friday afternoon traffic south on Highway 101 is against traffic.

Cross the GG Bridge and follow the signs for Highway 1 through the city (Park Presidio Blvd and 19th Ave) and then onto to I280S -> I380E to the airport.

Agree with WhiteD. I would still do the 5 PM but leave in plenty of time . Assume a best case scenario of an hour and 30 and then pad that time

margo,

When you say you are coming from the "Sonoma area", it makes a difference from which "area" you are coming. Are you coming from the town of Sonoma, somewhere in the Sonoma Valley, or somewhere in Sonoma County.....which is vast. Are you coming from Healdsburg or the Russian River area or Santa Rosa, or Bodega Bay, or somewhere on the north Sonoma coast?

For example, if you are coming from the town of Sonoma or Sonoma Valley, the Graton casino mentioned above will not impact you because you will be driving a different route.

Tell us from where and we can give you the best route and answer your question about time more accurately.

So tell us mini, when was the last time you drove from Sonoma to SF?

Your post is completely nonsensical. Where any of us work is not an issue. Your continued envy and irritation at other's knowledge is not worthy of you dear.

You can map your route on maps.google,com. My assumption based on the fact that you posted In the city of Sonoma forum and not Sonoma county forum was that you were coming from Sonoma town

But that is ok

MIni. Do you have a favorite recipe for egg nog that you can share with us. Thanks

OK, Margo, then you do not have to drive by the new casino, which has impacted traffic since it opened last week, or so.

Just take Hwy 12 from Glen Ellen south to the town of Sonoma. 8 miles. Turn right on Broadway (in front of the court house) and continue on Hwy 12 to Hwy 37. This is a no brainer, a traffic light at a dead end.. Turn right and in 7 miles it will take you to Hwy 101. (south of the casino) Cross the Golden Gate Bridge and from there follow White Dahlia's instructions in message #3.

Sonoma Plaza to the Golden Gate bridge is usually done in 45 minutes and Friday traffic is usually going out of the city, (SF) not into it. I might do the 5 o'clock flight just to give me more time and because I would need to get rid of the car, get through security, check in, etc. but it is your call.

Where are you staying in Glen Ellen? I grew up in Sonoma and am keeping a file on some recommendations for people who want to stay in the Sonoma Valley. Do give us a trip report when your trip is over, OK?

Enjoy the Valley. Since you will be in the Glen Ellen area you might enjoy a visit to Jack London State Park, just a couple of miles from the village. And if you are hikers, it has some great trails. One of them goes all the way up the mountain with great views. I have not had the courage to try that one.

I hope you are planning to visit the historic town of Sonoma, which was built in the early 1800's during the Mexican occupation, with a plaza, which, at 11 acres, is the largest public square in the state and the only one where you can legally take a bottle of wine to enjoy with your picnic lunch...bought, probably, at the Cheese Factory, across Spain Street.
