Best houseboat rentals on Lake Shasta

Can anyone give us some insight on renting a houseboat for 8 in July for a week? We are two families with teenagers who want to rent jet skis, fish and take hikes on shore. We are looking for a nice boat to accommodate everyone comfortably and one that has good air conditioning and won't break down!

My family did this many years ago and we had to carry all our gear down a big hill in a wheelbarrow to load and unload the boat. It was hot and tiring! Before we could even take off from the dock, the owners had to replace the battery on the boat which delayed our trip for many hours. Also, the air conditioner was useless (not good in August) and someone siphoned our gas from our truck in the parking lot while we were on the lake! Sorry to say that I can not remember the name of that company but it was so long ago they may have changed things anyway!

Jones Valley Resort not only has some of the nicest houseboats but is the only marina with complimentary shuttle service to and from your vessel. Their staff will load and unload your boat! They also have nighttime parking lot security. Check out www.houseboats.com.

Jones Valley. Bridge Bay. I would stick with one of these. Bridge bay is easier to load but all resorts will require work and it is hot! Bridge bay is a little more central to the lake. We have been going to Lake Shasta for over 20 years but we always do a resort.

You Should also check out Antlers Resort. Their boats are very clean and well kept. As for loading you stuff they actually pull a barge up into the parking lot to your rigs, you load from your rigs onto the barge. Then they drop the barge in the water and drive it to the Houseboat you are renting and you unload there. No hauling stuff up and down stairs.

We just got home from a 4-day vacation on a 14-person houseboat rented from Antlers. We had 2 families of 5 each, plus two other adults on board. It was tight but it worked. I would recommend keeping it to at least 2 less than the maximum capacity of the boat. We had a Genesis-class boat from Antlers -- their 2nd largest. It was clean and well appointed and while not the least expensive on Shasta Lake, it looked better than several others we saw. We rented a jet ski one day from Holiday Harbor. A few things to bear in mind is that sheets and towels must be separately reserved unless you can bring your own. Also, supplies of paper towels, soap, dish detergent etc. are minimal, so bring extra.

Shasta Lake Marina. We just returned from a week trip on a 16 person houseboat. There were 11 of us, from 9 months old to 73 years. We were very pleased with the service provided and the quality of the houseboat. We too had done this years ago when our children were small; house boats have changed. The one we were on had a generator that charged a bank of batteries, enough energy to run the refrigerator all night plus lights and assorted other chargers and/or machines used by all of us. Each accommodation had an electric plug in the room. The quality of the kitchen utensils and pots and pans was exceptional with a very nice assortment. The boat was clean and well maintained. When we had a problem with the hot tub Dale came out right away with a boat to fix it (we had sucked up one of the kids toys). We also rented a ski boat that was well equipped: wake board, rope, life vests, and kids skis.

When we loaded up the houseboat they put our things on a patio boat right at the boat ramp and helped us unload it onto the boat. No packing stuff up and down hill. There were paper towels provided and more than enough toilet paper.

Jones Valley was awesome. We rented a Titan which was in excellent condition and even nice than we had expected. Staff was very friendly. They have a constant ATV shuttle going that will drive all of your stuff to and from the houseboats, which was a huge luxury. I recommend them unreservedly.

Jones Valley is so big, so many boats and people going here and there, your a number waiting to depart. Also the desert like environs made it feel hotter than Haddes. Didn't provide enough ant spray for those buggers that get on your boat via ropes when beached, and the spiders! They come out of the boat's crevasses at night and web out. That was creepy and I killed a lot of them. Boat worked great, and they helped with unloading and checkout was quick. I'd like to try Shasta Marina next time; smaller marina may equal better customer service?
