Santa Monica For 6 Days

A family of 4 (2 adults + 18yr and 14yr) will be staying at the Marriott for 6 nights in mid August. We ahve a car rental. We have a sort of itinerary and would welcome some tips and advice.

A day relaxing around Santa Monica and probably bike hire to Venice and Marina del Rey. Is that easy and doable and are there any activities in Marina del Rey?

A day out at Disneyland ( I promised so I've got to do it). I gather it could be a couple of hours or more to drive there. We would like to be there early (for 9am - 9.30am) but will leave Disneyland at night about 10pm. I hope the journey time is quicker coming back.

A slow drive to Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach one afternoon. I take there are some jetskiing at Redondo Beach.

A trip to Beverley Hills, Sunset Strip and Hollywood Boulevard. Seeing the sights and we will probably get the Trolley Tour in Beverley Hills. Is there plenty of parking? We intend to get up to Griffith Observatory before sunset and watch the sun go down and see LA light up.

A trip over to Mailibu one morning or afternoon. Is there a road off the PCH which goes up the mountains which offers a good view?

All the rest of the time we will be around Santa Monica - all the evening for restaurants, shopping and bars...and not forgetting the pier. I have read the rest of this forum for information regarding restaurants and bars...but if anybody has a top tip/recommendation for a restaurant or a bar then I will take note. Is there mini golf nearby?

In advance thanks for any information and advice. Can't wait for August 19th.

Sounds good. The drive to DL would be closer to 75 minutes or so but you'll have to queue up to park the car and then wait for the free tram to the Park's entrance (which will add another 30 minutes). Say "Hi" to Mickey for me.

Yes, there's plenty of parking in Beverly Hills. Look for the city-owned parking structures that have signs announcing 1 or 2 hours of free parking.

Any of the main canyon roads that intersect with PCH will give you views but to be honest, the views from PCH are already really good so driving up into the canyons will just show you really good views from further away.

There's not a lot in Marina Del Rey, but there are the usual boat / watercraft rentals and harbor tours you can do. Beyond that of course there's tons of boats to see and lots of restaurants. There's also fisherman's village at the far end of the Marina, several restaurants and a few shops there. Honestly its charming but its seen better days as well - its redeeming quality is usually they have live music there on weekends.

No worries parking in Beverly Hills. Lots of city-owned parking structures with metered parking along South Santa Monica Blvd., and also there's the big underground parking structure next to the Crate and Barrel store on Beverly Drive just south of S. Santa Monica Blvd. Be careful parking in Beverly Hills though, especially on the street or anywhere metered - city parking enforcement in Beverly Hills is brutal, even savage, so be sure to pay attention to posted signs, time limits, and don't let the parking meter run out.

As for restaurants and bars - the area is filled with great places to go. Either head over to Main Street and go to Tar and Roses, Chaya Venice, Stella Rossa, M Kitchen, Chinois, and more. Definitely have a dinner at Catch, at Casa del Mar, pretty room and gorgeous views. Walk over toward the Promenade (but don't choose a restaurant or bar there, it's all tourists), and try places like Bar Pintxo, Hillstone, Ivy, and anything you see that you like along Ocean. The roof of the SM Place has options, also. Montana Avenue is where to go if you want lunch or breakfast - at night R+D Kitchen is filled with locals.

There's no nearby miniature golf, you'd have to drive toward Magic Mountain for that.

For your visit to Disneyland....Disneyland will close at 12pm in Mid August. And the nightime entertainment is not to be missed if possible, Fireworks start at 9:30, and the Fantasmic show one at 9pm and 10:30. And World of Color shows at 9pm and 10:15pm. So you would miss some of that if you tried to leave earlier.

Leaving right after the Fireworks show is not a good option for you since you are driving and would be Parking in the Disneyland Parking lot. Most of the families with smaller children will leave right after the Fireworks show around 9:45 and it will take forever just to get out of Disneyland and the Parking lots.

Hours are also starting at 8am. Disneyland is very busy mid August since most Schools in the U.S. are out for Summer Breaktime still. Plus the first few hours after opening time are the least busy time at Disneyland, so you might consider leaving alot earlier.

You also might want to consider overlapping your stay where you dont check out of your Santa Monica accomodations, but get somewhere inexpensive to stay just across the street from Disneyland for the night, so you can stay later, and not be trying to drive back to Santa Monica late at night when everyone is tired after already walking around all day.
