Trip idea

Hi,

I and my wife will be traveling to visit my daughter who is studying in SM from 6/12-7/1. Upon arrival, we plan to go to San Diego with our daughter from 6/13-6/16 before the college resumes class again on 6/17.

We want to spend time with her during weekends but are considering where to go during weekdays. Las Vegas and Grand Canyon are our options but don't know whether the time will be insufficient, leave SM on Monday and return on Thursday. Any short term trip idea with the base in SM is also welcome.

We did visit SM last year and drove along the coastline to San Francisco and returned via Yosemite for two weeks.

Tks in advance.

Based in SM ? Does that mean day trips or you want to go away for a few days ? What is the issue with going to the Grand Canyon ? If you have 5 weekdays that is plenty to check it out

Day trips to museums like the Getty or to Laguna Beach or to Santa Barbara. What do you like doing ?

We would like to base in SM as my daughter lives there. Sine she will be busy during school days that either day trip or a few days trip from SM are fine with us as we want to meet up during weekend period.

We mention Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, since I have never bee there but these places look interesting and we can return before weekends. We like nature more than city view.

There's no reason you couldn't go to Vegas Monday-Thursday and do an overnight trip to the Grand Canyon from there. Other ideas for the weekdays would include day or multi-day trips to San Diego or perhaps Palm Springs. However, be advised that temperatures in desert areas like Palm Springs and Las Vegas in the June / July timeframe can be very hot.

This will be a good time of year to visit our local mountains, two hours away. Either visit Lake Arrowhead or Big Bear Lake. Nice to be in the mountains with an Alpine setting.

Thank you for the advices.

Just want to know better about the idea of going to Vegas and Grand Canyon. How should I plan if we want to do the trip from Monday to Thursday? Depart from SM on Monday and spend the night and Tuesday (full day) in Vegas. Go to Grand Canyon on Wednesday and spend the night and return to SM on Thursday? Seems a tight schedule.

For Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear Lake, can we do day trip to these places? Since we shall use SM as our base, we wish to leave our luggages behind (without the need of moving stuffs around) so that we can be flexible enough and don't need to reserve accommodation in different places at different dates.

You can visit Vegas from SM for a short trip, but not include the Grand Canyon (you would want to see the south rim, not the north rim, closest to Vegas). Not much to do in Big Bear, but yes you can go for the day.

Yes, you can make a day trip to our local mountains. Skiers do it all the time, or it's a nice respite from LA. The closest is Lake Arrowhead at about an hour and half away. Another 30 mi to BB. We had a family cabin there for years and went year around.

You might find Arrowhead a bit more charming for first time visit, near the LA Resort. The Alpine Village is cute with shops and restaurants. There is also a tour around the lake in a boat that gives the history of the area and points out many celebrities homes and location of movies filmed in the past.

Leave SM after work commute traffic, and have lunch in the mountains. It will be pleasant in June.

Consider flying to Las Vegas. Southwest.com has hourly flights departing LAX that take about an hour. Take carry-on luggage only so you won 't waste time at baggage claim. You don't need to be at LAX more than an hour before departure. And the best part: you'll avoid driving thru 'rush hour' traffic on Monday morning to get to LV.

The LV airjport is just 5-10 minutes from the hotel zone and there are 8 van companies with frequent transfers. Fare is around $14 return as I recall. If you leave early enough, uou can have breakfast in LV on Monday. Lots of tour companies go to the GC from LV. Ask for recs on the LV Forum. Return flights depart as late as 10 pm on Thursday.
