What other Area to stay close to Santa Monica?

Hi

Looking at spending the last night/day of our 3 week Holiday in or around Santa Monica, but cannot believe the huge prices for Accommodation for average Hotels.

Is there an areas close by that is good and easy bike distance to Santa Monica and Venice beach? We just wanting to do the tourist thing and go check it out during the day and go to Bubba Gump Restaurant too.

Are we best to just catch a cab there from somewhere close? Want somewhere clean and safe for kids, pool. There is a deal on Newport Beach Fairmont for $139 per night which is cheap and thought maybe just spend $$ on Taxi's when we need them? Is it boring there?? Or is Del Rey Marina area better?

Thanks, from Aussie and have no idea on area. Have 1 night and full day before a midnight flight home.

thanks.

Check out the Sea View Inn in Manhattan Beach, a block up from the beach and bike path and 3 miles south of LAX. They lend bikes, boogie boards and beach chairs. You could ride to Venice Beach and Santa Monica if you were able. Located around shops and restaurants, and a neighborhood market across the street.

Newport Beach is an hour by car and a taxi would cost more than your hotel rate -- each way!

Look into Marina del Rey.

Marina Del Rey, or Westwood (near UCLA) would be your best bets. From Westwood you can easily take public transit to Santa Monica and not need to bother with a taxi.

Agree with the above, Newport beach is way too far - the drive would be at least an hour and the taxi fare would make you wish you'd just gone for the hotel in Santa Monica.

But, be aware, Santa Monica and anywhere nearby, $139 will most likely be a below-average hotel if you book directly with the hotel. The central LA area is more like $180-200 for average hotels.

What dates are you speaking of?

What is the most you can spend for a hotel (be aware that there is 'room tax' of about 15% added to all rooms).

How close is "close" (5 minutes, 10 minutes, 20 minutes?)

How many people in your family? How many beds (and their size) do you need?

Where are you getting bicycles from?

I think Marina del Rey is a good alternative for you. You can find some really inexpensive hotels, and they are all near the beach. Marina International isn't too bad, and the prices are around $139 on weekdays. They also have bungalows with a kitchenette that start a little higher. You can rent bikes just a few minutes walk away on Washington Blvd. near the pier. Then bike up to Venice and Santa Monica. you can actually walk to Santa Monica from there, it'll take 90 minutes or so each way.

Hi

Thanks, for all the replies somehow they never came thru to my Blackberry.

Yes, Newport Beach seems to far, Thanks for the info, hard to tell on a small map!ha

There is 4 of us, 2 Adults and 2 Kids 6yrs and 9yrs old, so just 2 x Queen Beds.

Because we will basically just be sleeping the 1 night then out all day, thought it silly to spend $400 for Accommodation in Santa Monica, can't find anything much cheaper there.

Looking at TA info on Area's they recommend "West Hollywood" it seems to have restaurants around the area and not far from Santa Monica is that correct?

I thought a bike ride along the beach would be fun, but not necessary if none for Hire. Have just been told to check out Santa Monica and Venice Beach while we are there, so thought would do that and have not a long drive to Airport for Departure.

Is Westwood closer than West Hollywood to Santa Monica, which would be your pick?

Thanks , gets very confusing when you have no idea of traffic and whats in the area's, appreciate all your local knowledge.

Did you check out the price of the Sea View Inn in post #1? You don't have to pay for bikes, or parking, and it's 3 miles to LAX.

I had a quick look at it, but read mixed reviews.

How long would it take by Taxi to Santa Monica Pier and cost from Sea View Inn?

Which is closer to Santa Monica Brentwood or West Hollywood with traffic etc?

Thanks.

Brentwood is closer to Santa Monica, but based on your other posting Marina Del Rey would probably be better. Marina Del Rey is between LAX and Santa Monica, so if you take a taxi over to Santa Monica for the day and leave your luggage at your hotel, then you can swing by the hotel to pick it up on the way to LAX. Brentwood is northeast of Santa Monica and in the other direction to LAX, so you could do the same but you'll be going out of your way a bit. West Hollywood is a real detour to go back to pick up your luggage after Santa Monica a its not on the way to LAX at all. But based on this and your other posting, Westwood would probably be the best area - again, easy bus access to Santa Monica, even the FlyAway bus from Westwood back to LAX for $5 (www.lawa.org/flyaway), and its a very walkable area with all sorts of shops, and its about the same for being "out of the way" on the way back to LAX as Brentwood is, really a bit better. As for Brentwood, not sure what hotel you are thinking of but it tends not to be such a walkable area so you might not find shops/restaurants nearby if you're on foot.
