Well, that's pretty subjective. It usually takes about 2-3 hours to get to SD from SM, and vice versa, depending on traffic, etc. So that's how much transit time you're looking at. I have no idea how long the company will give you at the zoo... but SD zoo is widely considered one of the top ten zoos in the world.

I would not take a bus tour form Santa Monica to spend the day at the SanDiego zoo. It is just too much traffic an ddriving to do it roudn trip and then have the energy to also enjoy the zoo. I'd either save it for another trip or spend at least 1 night in San Diego.

Most tour companies pick up between 8:00 and 8:45 and start on their way to the zoo around 9:00 am and return you to your hotel by 9:00 pm. The commute will take about 2-1/2 hours to SD and about 3 hours back (since you will be riding during rush hour -- after 3:00 pm, Monday thru Friday. In addition, you will spend some time on the bus "picking up other guests" and when you return you will probably be driven around L.A. while others are dropped off (at least 30 to 45 minutes in each direction). So, that comes to about 7 hours "on the bus" and about 5-1/2 hours in San Diego.

The zoo is truly spectacular and is well worth the visit but the question remains: Is 7 hours on a bus for a 5 hour visit too much travel for one day?

Another option: take an inexpensive hotel room in San Diego and stay overnight. There is much to see and do in SD over 2 days and by splitting your trip into 2 days, your daily commute would be only about 4-1/2 hours (using public transit + the Amtrak train between the cities). The train ride is quite scenic along part of the route and you can walk around the train during the ride, grab a snack, etc -- something you can't do on the bus.

Starline's tour which includes general admission and the round trip bus transfer costs $89. If you "did it yourself" (which, you could do in one day, if you wanted) it would cost:

Express bus from Santa Monica to downtown L.A.'s Union (train) Station: 1 hour, $1.75

Amtrak train to SD "Zoo" station (this includes the train ride to SD's main train station. (Sometime you can book an additonal bus through Amtrak called the "thruway bus" to the Zoo area. Call amtrak for info.:

$58 per person, round trip (The train ride is just under 3 hours and is not affected by "rush hour" traffic).

Once at the station in San Diego, take the #7b bus or the #7 bus from the corner of Front St & Broadway (5 blocks east of the train station) northbound to Park Bl & Zoo Place (19 minutes, $2)

Total transit cost: $61.75

Regular Zoo admission: $22.75

Total trip cost: $84.50 ($4.50 less than the Starline tour).

If you upgrade to the Zoo's "Best Value Admission" (for $33), you get unlimited use of the Guided Bus Tour and Express bus (a TRUE benefit when you consider how huge and hilly the Zoo is) as well as unlimited rides on the Skyfair Aerial Tram.

That's just $4.50 more than the Coach Tour and, trust me, your feet will thank you at the end of the day.

If you decide to spend a second day in SD, check out Sea World.

Good luck!
