Unless the winds are of the Santa Ana variety, they tend to be on the cool side. They're only "cold" when arctic air passes through.

Wind is the least of Santa Maria's problems, though. Suggest you look into Orcutt over SM.

Damon, Yes, it does get a little windy in the summer. However, we get nice mild summers and lots of sunshine. Nothing like Sacramento though. If you're looking for a good bargain, Santa Maria is your place. The beach communities are much higher in terms of price for food, housing and entertainment. The fact that we are only 20 or so minutes from the closest beach community gives us the best of everything. We are old timers here and love living in this city

I settled in Sta Maria after 30 years gov't travel job, living in 12 locations around the country as well, and fulltime RVing for ten years; I concur with the previous assessment. I thoroughly researched the area, also search on City-data.gov, found no evidence of serious threat from any weather, earthquake, tsunami, snow, sleet, rarely thunderstorm or even summer rain. And while the wind CAN blow for days springtime, weather's still mild and finer than SO many places, F'rinstamce, cool summer this, average daily temp 1st week this July was 5 degrees cooler than 1st week Jan. Good jr. College, state U's 30 n, 70 s. Beach 30 mins, developed OR wild, dines, mountains, valleys, valley oaks decorating pastures and vineyards, at least one farmers' mmarket w/I 20 miles 7 days a week, almost year round; surrounded by vineyards and wineries, as well. Several community/college theater/music venues including casino name performer shows 20 s near Solvang, the "Danish Village"...anyhow, I picked a great place to settle...almost forgot Vandenberg AFB, our Space Cemter, providing good jobs and bright people AND spectacular rocket launches!!! SO, get a short haircut and perhaps a windbreaker (may not need anything much heavier) and come visit a month or two, even in winter, you'll find lots of friendly, helpful, hardworking folks as neighbors. After five years, my ONLY gripes are that the traffic light timing coordinator and the ?one? Gasoline distributor must be on cahoots OR Married or something: highest gasoline prices and longest stoplights of any place I've ever lived! I'm retired, in good health, volunteer with 3rd largues Elks' Lodge in US, with American Legion, with Marine Corps League, and with ampsurf.org, free adaptive Surfing Clinics 2nd Saturdays at Addie Beach/Pismo Beach...come out and join The Fun .
