Chilly Santa Cruz bicycle cruzes

We will be returning to Santa Cruz the 1st week in Dec'06. Realize it'll be chilly but can it be colder than Lake Michigan. I want to rent a bike & cruise nature sites but even on bike neighborhoods can be good. Anyone ever rented bikes to sightsee there?

We have only been there for a couple of restaurants so don't know much about the place. Going to be there 3 days. Check out the butterflies & who knows what else.

It is about 58 degrees (fahrenheit) in Santa Cruz this afternoon, which is fairly typical for this time of year. There is a chance that you may have some rain to contend with, however.

I see a lot of bike riders on the counry roads around here. Here is one idea... From Water Street, ride out North Branciforte Drive to Goss, turn left for a block and then right....go out past DeLaveaga Park to the Mystery Spot. The road leading in is well marked with a bright yellow sign. This is a place in the woods where they tell you that the law of gravity has gone haywire. Balls seem to roll uphill, etc. It's all optical illusion, of course, but it is kind of spooky and fun.

If you need a place to rent a bike, try Family Cycling Center on 41st Ave near Capitola. www.FamilyCycling.com - very friendly business.

From there, you can ride one block down to East Cliff and follow the coast for miles to Santa Cruz. My neighbor cycles in the Corralitos area, parks near the Corralitos Market and rides around the rural farm roads. For off-road biking, try Nisene Marks park in Aptos or Wilder Ranch just north of Santa Cruz.
