Help needed to plan trip to UCSB with my daughter

My daughter is starting at UCSB for an exchange year in Sept (from UK). I am travelling over with her to see her settled in, and plan to stay about a week, as she has to start induction classes before she can move into Uni accommodation.

I need advice on the following please:

1. Recommendations of places to stay - we would prefer to be near to UCSB and would prefer an apartment/suite to a hotel room, since we are staying a week.

2. best shops to go locally to buy essentials for her year (which we can't bring with us) eg bed linen, bicycle etc

3. Should I arrange car hire before I arrive or is this easy to do locally ?

4. I would also appreciate suggestions of things for me to do/places to see during the day (while my daughter is on her induction course)

Many thanks!

1. I would look into pacifica suites to stay, since they have a refrigerator and 2 rooms to give you more space.

2. I would drive down to Target in Ventura. This is a good one stop shop for your essentials. If you don't want to go that far you could shop at KMART, Linens & Things at Hollister and Storke. There is also a Bed Bath & Beyond (which I like a little bit better thand Linens & Things) at Fairview and Calle Real.

3. Generally it seems cheaper to rent a car a head of time. If you are flying into SBA, there are the airport rental agencies and there is Enterprise rent-a-car close to the airport.

4. Browsing state street from 400 state - 1300 state street shopping/art galleries, visit the courthouse, the mission, alice keck part (small garden), the art museum is small but very nice, visit some wine tasting rooms, beach/harbor. If you give a little more info on your interests I may have some other ideas. If you like gardens Lotusland is very interesting you need to book ahead of time.

A car would be extremely handy for the shopping you need to do. Target or Walmart stores would probably carry everything you need from linen to bicycles.

You might want to consider flying into LAX and renting your car there from a wide selection of car rental companies. www.kayak.com has competitive rates from different companies. Then it is less than 100 miles to Santa Barbara, and you will find Target and Walmart stores on the way, such as the Walmart which is close to where Highway 1 joins 101 in Oxnard. at 2001 N. Rose Ave.

My favorite bicycle store is Open Air Bicycles. They have a good selection of quality bikes. Their phone ad states they are specialists in women's cycling needs. They are located in the parking lot of the train station. If you're looking for high end racing and road bikes, then I would consider at FastTrack Cycles on Canon Perdido St.

thanks for your replies - very useful info. We're flying into LAX and were planning to take the shuttle bus to santa barbara and then hire a car the following day - does that sound sensible, or should I just hire from the airport?

Thanks for the suggestions of things to do, Majmaj 4: my interests are music , walking, sightseeing...and I had heard this was a good spot for whale watching - are there boat trips and would I need to book ahead?

Many thanks!

Thanks for these suggestions. The Pacifica Suites looks great, but is fully booked for our dates. Are there any other similar hotels near UCSB that people would recommend?

Thanks.

Not as close the the college, but Franciscan Inn is a similar setup to Pacifica Suites.

If you are flying in and out of LA, it is probably more cost effective to rent the car from there (cheaper per day than from SB).

http://www.condorcruises.com/ has information on whale watching.

You may luck out and have some music events while you are in town. There are some free concerts in the summer, as well as other events through the Lobero and the Music Academy.

I hope you are availing yourselves of the UCSB Student Orientation Program, which is directed by my son's fantastic girlfriend (a student herself). Whether she/you just contact them for additional suggestions, or go there for one of the sessions (!!!) you will find them to be caring beyond measure. The orientation team helps students with every kind of question - from where to shop the most cheaply, to help with drawing up their class schedule.

I would append that Michelle would be particularly sensitive, in part because she and my son were accepted to be exchange students at either Warwick or Lancaster (see?) for this coming year, but it conflicted with her work. (And so he didn't go either...)

If I can be of any more help, such as linking you up with her, please feel free to PM me.

Oh -- and there's this:

In the meantime, I concur with the Pacifica Suites, but book ASAP. And there are several car rental places around SBA airport -- which is right next to UCSB and less than a mile from the Pacifica Suites. Enterprise is usually cheapest, but I frequently get specials from Alamo co. for about $20/day. I mention these because I'm afraid to drive on the other side of the road.....

Congratulations to you both.

Whoops, I failed to focus on your comment re Pacifica Suites being full. There's a brand new Hampton Inn & Suites on Hollister Avenue in Goleta that is quite near the campus. Again, check it ASAP. Otherwise, you might ask for a suite at the Holiday Inn on Calle Real - just across the highway from the Pacifica, Hampton, airport and campus - in Goleta.

One additional thought. If your daughter will be living in an apartment, you might seriously consider getting her a membership with Costco, one of our "big box" warehouse stores that has a wide variety of things from clothing and things for an apartment to food. It costs $50, and is by far the nearest and cheapest - good quality - place. I believe most students belong, so she could check it out with friends first. Unfortunately, Walmart and Target are awfully far away for a student.

Thanks Firewind for your replies and esp the tip re the new Hampton Inn - I've managed to book in there.

Shame your son and his girlfiriend have not been able to take up the opportunity to study in UK for the year.

My daughter has had contact with several staff in the EAP office at UCSB who have been very helpful with her questions to date, everything seems really well organised!

Whoops again, and sorry! I just checked the rates for the Hampton, and I am shocked. Hampton is supposed to be the "low cost" part of the Hilton family. Well, I hope the currency exchange rate softens it for you. And it's brand new. And, I expect you will love the area. So it will be worth it.
