Fourth July in Santa Barbara

We're planning a trip to SB for the 4th July. We are staying at the Fess Parker Doubletree and were wonder if they shoot the fireworks from the water over the Stern's Pier.....What other things should we do there the three days we will be there ...Thanks!!

There are fireworks. I think last year they were off east beach, so you should be able to walk across the street or view from a patio if you get one.

Other things depend on your interests: eat some seafood, and california cuisine, rent bikes, taste wine, take a boat trip to the islands, kayak, shop along state street....

The fireworks are shot from West Beach between Stearns Wharf and the breakwater at the Harbor. I seem to recall in past years they either shoot them from the end of the breakwater or from a barge near the Harbor entrance. Plan on walking for a bit to get to your best seat, because if you take your car in, you'll be stuck waiting for the masses to pass by before anyone really lets the cars get out.

You can walk out to the end of Stearns Wharf but I think that might be a bit close to the fireworks. You can watch from the entrance of Stearns Wharf. Or you might try to find a seat on the benches on the west arm of the Harbor by where the Condor docks. That might be a bit close too.

We have lots of great fine dining restaurants - Ca Dario, Sage & Onion, Opal, Downey's, Wine Cask, Louie's, Miro, Bella Vista; great everyday restaurants - Brophy Bros, Enterprise Fish Co., Los Arroyos, Rose's on the Mesa, Arigato.

We have night life, but I'm not part of that scene so I don't totally know which are hippest, but you might try Elsie's, Rocks, Blue Agave, Mel's, Q's, Chad's, Joe's, Wildcat, Sharkeez, and Soho has music nightly. There are more mellow locales like 31 West or Ty's Lounge.

We have hikes, history, culture, gardens, and a cute small zoo. Time for bed, so I'll leave you with these links:

Is that enough? Then you have day trips to the Getty Museum, Huntington Gardens and Library, Solvang, Bakersfield (just kidding on that one), Hollywood, Universal.

If your major goal is to relax, stroll along State St, eat at our best restaurants, window shop, stroll along the beach, July will be warm enough for a swim, go for a hike in the hills, or on the islands.

Oh yeah... Stretch out on the lawn of the Courthouse, for the free Pops Concert by the SB Symphony that usually occurs on the Fourth.
