Can you take a day trip to Hearst Castle from Carmel

I am planning to travel to Hearst Castle and am looking for a place to spend the night, within a few hours driving distance. Looking for a nice hotel or B&B. Would Carmel be a reasonable location, or are there other cities nearby with lovely accomodations?

Carmel is about 2 1/2-3 hours north of Hearst Castle via Highway 1 through Big Sur. There's only 90 miles between the two, but that part of the highway will be slow due to the fact that the highway rises high above the Pacific Ocean with sheer drop offs in some areas along with several hairpin turns. There are some sections where the roadway narrows considerably and a few areas with road construction where there is only 1 lane for both directions that are signal controlled. It's a gorgeous drive and you'll probably want to add time to the drive for frequent stops to take in the views.

Carmel has many lovely accommodations, as does nearby Pacific Grove.

Here are few for your consideration:

You can return to Carmel via Highway 46 east 11 miles south of Hearst Castle to Highway 101 north to Highway 68 west after your Hearst tour
