Camping at San Simeon State Beach

Thinking about camping here for a couple of nights in August while visiting the castle. Anybody have any favorite tent sites at the State Beach campgrounds?? I know it's not site-specific but suggestions are always appreciated.

Thanks.

It's a nice clean, quiet campground. Stay at San Simeon Creek. Washburn is very primitive. I would just say to request something away from the highway. There is a nice walking trail through the nature and wild life. You can also walk to the beach on a trail that runs underneath Hwy 1.

Thanks for the tip. How long does it take to walk to the beach from the campground? How far is it from Hearst Castle. We leave next week!!

The walk to the beach from the campground is only a few minutes walk. There is a boardwalk that goes under a Hwy 1 bridge. The waves may be a little rough there and it can get windy.

A much nicer beach is William Randolph Hearst state park located directly across Hwy 1 from the castle. It is a couple minutes drive north of the campground. It is situated in a protected cove, but still has o.k. waves. The park has a pier, picnic tables, BBQ's, a marine educational center and kayak rentals. I especailly like to hike out to the point. Usually you can see a few otters. The park is free. The guard shack at the entrance is empty.

Thanks CambriaFisherman! Is the Hearst State Beach good for young kids and Boogie boarding? Also any good restaurants in the area?

There are lots of great restaurants in nearby Cambria. Moonstone Beach Bar & Grill, Sow's Ear, Sea Chest and Robin's are a few great ones. :)

A really terrific beach for the kids is in Cayucos just 15 minutes south of Cambria. Nice pier there, too. Moonstone Beach in Cambria is fun for rock hunting, but not so much for boogie boarding. Be aware that rip-tides are common along the Central Coast. Keep a good eye on your kids while they're in the water and know ahead of time what to do if they (or you) get caught in one.
