Santa Margarita Ranch wedding June 8, 2013

Love is in the air! But what does a family of five (3 twenty-somethings and two fogeys) do if we arrive by air in San Francisco late on the 1st? Yosemite or the Coast? Both? Airfares won't leave a huge budget for the week, but we all would like to make the most of this part of California while we are there. Suggestions?

Lodging for Yosemite books up a year in advance. If this is a must see for you (And it should be for everybody), then visit the Yosemite National Parks Forums for ideas on how to secure lodging for your June visit.

As for the coast... Are you interested in spending any time in San Francisco at all? That could take up a day or 4. Then you could travel down the coast with a one or 2 night stop in Monterey.

June is the beginning of our busy travel season, so lodging rates will be higher.

Monterey lodging: Casa Munras, Best Western Victorian Inn, Best Western DeAnza Inn, Monterey Bay Inn.

While in Monterey, you can enjoy Cannery Row, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Carmel by the Sea, Carmel Beach & spectacular Point Lobos State Reserve.

After Monterey, you can drive down through the beautiful and dramatic Big Sur coast taking in the sights:

Bixby Bridge, Point Sur Lighthouse, Pfeiffer Beach, Nepenthe/Phoenix Shop (Lunch with a fabulous view of the Big Sur coast www.nepenthebigsur.com ), McWay Falls @ Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park (Famous ribbon waterfall that drops on to an inaccessible beach), Ragged Point, elephant seal rookery, Hearst Castle.

If Yosemite doesn't pan out, you could add a night to the pretty seaside town of Cambria and visit Hearst Castle from there or just enjoy the quaint shops in town, as well as Moonstone Beach's wooden path along the ocean.

Cambria lodging: Castle Inn, Fog Catcher Inn, Cambria Pines Lodge and there's a decent Motel 6 in San Simeon a few minutes away, as well. That Motel 6 used to be a Holiday Inn, so the rooms are a little nicer than your typical Motel 6.
