SLO or Cambria?

Hi. Looking for opinions on whether to stay in SLO or Cambria.

We are 2 thirty-something friends driving up the coast. Our stop will be on a Sunday night in late-August. We'd prefer to stay where we can walk to a good restaurant and bar and not have to drive back to the hotel, but have sights to see during the afternoon. (driving in from Santa Barbara)

Both SLO and Cambria have been recommended by friends. I realize that these two choices are very different, so we'd love some help making the decision. I've heard Cambria described as "quaint and quirky" which is appealing, I'm just afraid it may be too quiet on a Sunday night.

Looking to spend around $150 for a decent room, so any hotel suggestion is also appreciated.

Hi yogarunner

Monterey Street is a very safe area and most of the hotels here are clean and decent. Yes, there are a few negative reviews on tripadvisor, but, if you're just looking for a place to sleep, it should suffice. Another option you might consider is the Peach Tree Inn or Petit Soliel.

Hi Stay in SLO....stay at the San Luis Creek Lodge on Monterey and walk to town and stay out as late as you want....restaurants, people watching, stores open late, bars, not rowdy...just fun...especially the walk back to the room. Cambria is pretty well shut down at night after dinner...just drive up there for the afternoon from SLO...Do all of the little side streets in downtown SLO..unique shopping, great business owners who have time to chat with you and tell you about the area. Eat lunch at Mo's BBQ funky and GOOD. Eat dinner at the Brambles in Cambria..best steak ever. That is it..have fun.
