San Jose Eats--3 nights

Got Sunday, Monday and Tuesday dinner choices.

Staying at Hilton; no car but can/will use public transit/cabs.

Looking for upscale rest. recommendations. Price not an issue.

Il Fornaio - Italian (good food; nice restaurant)

www.ilfornaio.com/…

Arcadia - Michael Mina

Food is good; decor just average for a Michael Mina restaurant

michaelmina.net/restaurants/…arsj.php

Zona Rosa

Small place (reservations highly recommended); farm to table upscale Mexican cuisine

Its a bit rustic in the atmosphere but enjoyable to talk and enjoy the food.

If interested in shopping one night - take a taxi to Santana Row area (its not downtown but taxi would work)

Several restaurants such as:

Left Bank

Thea - Greek Food

No need to cab or taxi anywhere if you want to stay downtown. The Grill over by the Fairmont or Morton's nearby if you want traditional steakhouse. Have been wanted to try Arcadia but have not done so. Here is a list of all the downtown area spots, most walking distance of your hotel but certainly a quick cab ride over.

San Pedro Square Market itself is more casual than you probably want. But many of the above listed finer dining spots are located near here. http://www.sanpedrosquaremarket.com/

If you want Michelin starred type experience, Manresa and Plumed Horse are a long cab ride away.

Reviews can be mixed but my wife and I had a great meal at Paolo's a month or tow back. I'm usually too much f a tightwad but we had gift cards. You can walk to it also.

In addition to those mentioned already, there is a new restaurant called Namea Greek Taverna on 1st and San Fernando - a few blocks from your hotel. I went there for lunch a couple months ago and it was quite good - definitely go back.

Thanks everyone. Amazing how the locals know where to steer us visitors; great recommendations! Web links great too.

Now my problem is how many of these spots I can hit in 3 days.

I know you asked for dinner, however, if you are going to snack for lunch, then add BackAYard to your list. It is worthy a trip on it's own. I eat at their original hole in the wall restaurant in Menlo Park. I LOVE their jerk Salmon and pork dish. The cook this fish perfectly and have great record for being consistent with their quality. Their Salmon jerk is perfectly done-outside slightly crunchy with a crust while the inside is tender and flaky. I think this dish could easily be worth $20; however, it is only $11. I think the way they do their fish is on par with a lot of fancier restaurants. From what I read, the San Jose location is well received by people on Yelp. Instead of eating junk for and wasting money on lunch, eat at this place.

Manresa Restaurant and The Plumed Horse are "long" cab rides (15 minutes?), but worth the effort. Transcendent food from two star Michelin restaurants.

I also love Original Joe's in Downtown San Jose, not transcendent, but a San Jose classic.

Also look at Billy Berk's, Arcadia and Mezcal (Oaxacan menu).

Ditto Original Joes for classic Italian in a unique setting!
