San Jose to Sacramento

My husband will be in the San Jose area for a week of training, we are arriving on Thurs 3/6/08. We want to take a day trip to Sacramento and then return to San Jose via a quick stop in Napa. My question is what is the traffic like heading towards Sacramento on a Fri morning. (I'm sure we will be up fairly early since we will still be on east coast time.) If we get on the road by 6:30-7:00 am how long will it take? Also, what time should we head back from Napa to miss most of the evening rush hour traffic?

Thanks!

First off, it does not take 3 hours to get to San Jose from Sac, I lived in San Jose and commuted to Sac for 5 years a few days a week. It takes about 2 hours. If you leave around 7 you should be there by 9 no worries. You will get a little traffic heading out, the bridge. Traffic once you hit Sac should be over since most people are state workers and work at 8. Old Sac and the capitol are pretty cool, plus Jelly Belly is fun. Kids love it! Now getting home is a different story, you should leave around 6:30-7ish.

Your daughter might not like Napa, it is really all about drinking, although some of the wineries are totally cool. If you do not have any big feeling toward a specific winery you can also check the ones out in Pleasanton or Livermore...This is where we take our out of towners... HA HA...

She will for sure love Santa Cruz! San Francisco is a must, the kids love Alcatraz too. Muir woods is kinda cool!

Have fun!
