Sacramento outdoors

My husband and I are going to be going to Sacramento next weekend for a 3 day weekend. We are considering moving there (possible job in Roseville) and wanted to try to get a lay of the land. We would move to the area really for outdoors activities-hiking, biking, kayaking, etc so would like to see what all is available. We were thinking about going to Tahoe for part of a day, but didn't know what we should do there or with the rest of our time. Suggestions are appreciated!

If you are into biking you could rent a couple bikes and head up the American River Parkway. They have a trail that runs from Old Sacramento to Folsom Lake.

Here's a link for a shop that rents: http://citybicycleworks.com/

Tahoe can be done as a day trip but at this time of year you will have to watch the weather and carry tire chains. Skiing of course is the main activity in winter but it looks like you might be week or two early for that. I haven't heard that any resorts are open yet, although I've read that Heavenly is making snow.

We will definitely look into the biking. Any suggestions on hikes around the Sacramento area?
