Where to stay while looking for Apartments?

I'll be coming to Sacramento for 3-4 days in late June to help my son find an apartment in Downtown/Midtown Sacramento as he will be starting Law School at McGeorge in August. Any suggestions on Hotels to stay that we can park our car and walk to get a sense of the city life he may be experiencing while living there for the next three years?

There is a Residence Inn on 15th and L, which would make a nice choice. We've stayed there a few different times. It's very walkable most things in midtown

RE: walk to get a sense of the city life

Well... only downtown and midtown Sacramento are walkable. But those are only 2 of the facets of Sacramento city lives. The remainder of the city, by and large, is not walkable. Pretty much need a car. Bus service in Sacramento is horrible. Staying somewhere near the Sacramento Regional Transit lightrail may bring some convenience. But it is a 20-block (~1 mile) walk from the nearest lightrail station to this school.

Have you asked the school's housing office for advice on both housing and nearby hotels? Probably not a bad place to start. Not a horrible law school....from a Boalt Hall graduate.

The Sheraton, Citizen Hotel, or Kimpton Sawyer (all on J street) are good choices. The Hyatt across from the Capitol. While these are in downtown and you may want to walk more in midtown, it's just moments away via walking, uber, or a ride on the Regional transit bus #30 which goes in a loop down J street and up L street.

What's your budget and what amenities are you looking for in a hotel?

I would look at the Hyatt Recency, Sheraton Grand, Residence Inn or Inn off Capitol Park. These are all on the edge of Downtown (west of 16th) near Midtown (east of 16th) which is probably where he may want to locate. Midtown is a very walkable residential-business mix area with great restaurants and shops.

Thank you all for the great advice and links. We'll be staying at the Residence Inn and will hopefully be successful in our apartment search and enjoy the city.
