Paso to Monteray

Thinking of drivin up he coast on Rt 1.

I am a driver who hates curves and peaks, I assume it is beter going norh as you are not on the cliff side? is that true

Have driven part of fthe route from Carmel to Big sur in the past, do not plan on going to Hearst, is it worth the drive, is there much between Big Sur and Cambria ?

It's true that you're not on the cliff side driving south to north and later in the year I also think it's better because the lower sun is behind you. Although it's curvy at places the road is wide and in excellent condition (some roadworks though). Also Paso to Cambria via 46 is a beautiful drive. (and more roadworks right now). Hw1 is one of the most scenic coastal drives in the world.

The southern part of the drive has several really tight hairpin turns, so you will encounter some scary curves. However, every upcoming hairpin has a sign indicating the speed to take the turn, so just obey the speed posted and use the turn outs to allow faster drivers to go around you or to regain your composure and you'll be fine. Keep in mind that, while the drop offs are on the opposite side of the highway, you will have the coastal mountains hugging a good portion of your side of the highway on the drive up.

Is it worth it? A-B-S-O-L-U-T-E-L-Y!!

Some of the sights worth a stop:

The elephant seal rookery 4 miles north of Hearst Castle

Ragged Point (The beginning of the elevated drive up through Big Sur with amazing views from the back of the property)

McWay Falls @ Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park (Famous ribbon waterfall that drops on to an inaccessible beach)

Nepenthe (Great lunch stop with incredible views of the Big Sur coast)

Bixby Bridge (Iconic arch bridge used in many car ads)

Point Lobos State Reserve

Look at it as an adventure, not a scary drive.
