Can you give us an idea of your hotel budget per night? "Cheap" means different things to different people, so please let us know specifically.

A bit of walking will be necessary no matter where you stay, perhaps up to 2 miles each way. The Courtyard By Marriott in Pasadena would be a good place to start looking. This will put you near Old Town Pasadena, which is a very walkable area with lots of restaurants and shops.

The other possibility is that you may not wish to base your stay in Pasadena, which is not very central to the larger LA area. If you stay in downtown LA, for instance, you could use the Gold Line light rail train to reach Pasadena (the walk from the closest Gold Line station to the Flea Market is about the same as from most of the hotels in Pasadena), and you'd have good transit options from downtown LA to some of the other parts of LA that are popular with tourists.

I am assuming you won't have a car. As Mach3 said, you could stay elsewhere and take the Gold Line to the Memorial Park station, then walk 1.75 miles (a nice walk) to the Rose Bowl.

Or you could stay in Pasadena, not that bad a base and a very nice town in and of itself, with plenty to do, but obviously NO beach and few "Hollywood" connections. More pedestrian-friendly than many areas of LA. One possibility near Old Pasadena and walkable for Rose Bowl would be the Pasadena Inn, which is a block from the Del Mar Gold Line station, a couple of blocks from Old Pasadena, and near lots of restaurants: a good location. Fairly cheap, I think, but I've never been in the rooms. Certainly looks okay from the outside, driving by...

If you do stay elsewhere, think about giving yourselves a few extra hours in Pasadena. Located between the Rose Bowl and the Gold Line station: Gamble HOuse (beautiful historical house, tours); walking tour of turn-of-the-century neighborhood near Gamble House; Norton Simon Museum; Old Pasadena (walking, shopping, dining). You could spend a full day there, if any of the above interest you.

Thanks for your reponses. Looking at $75-85 a night. Looking at Howard Johnston is this too far from centre. Will have up to 5 days in Pasadena
