Rose Bowl Parade & Game - Traveling from Anaheim

Six of us will be going to the Rose Bowl Parade and Game on January 2, 2012. We are staying at Homewood Suites near Disneyland and are researching the best way to get to Pasadena for the parade and game. Also, is it worth reserving the grand stand seats; we were thinking of sitting near Pasadena City College. Thanks for your suggestions.

Do you plan to drive? Advice will vary a good bit depending on that.

Here's a map of Pasadena that includes all the Rose Bowl / Rose parade activities as well as the Gold Line stations in the area:

I would suggest going to Union Station in downtown Los Angeles. From there, take the Gold Line light rail train into Pasadena, exit at the Allen station and walk to the college or a good spot along Colorado Blvd.

If you have a car, drive to Union Station and park there. If you don't, you can take the Metrolink or Amtrak train (www.metrolinktrains.com, www.amtrak.com) from the Anaheim train station to Union Station. You can take a short taxi ride from your hotel to the train station - its a few miles away located next to Angel Stadium. Or you can get there via bus - check www.octa.net or maps.google.com. You can also take Metrolink (but not Amtrak) from the Orange train station which you can reach from your hotel on OCTA bus 54.

We are looking for alternatives to driving into Pasadena. We are not opposed to drive to catch the metro or a bus tour. How early would we need to arrive at the end of the route if we were not in the grandstands?

Thanks!

I don't think grandstand seats are needed if you are planning to watch anywhere east of Lake Avenue. Just try to arrive on Colorado by @ 7 am to find a good spot on the sidewalk. Watch from a spot that is walking distance to the Lake or Allen station of the Gold Line.

After the parade, or when you've seen enough of it, take the Gold Line west to Memorial Park Station. Exit the station and look for signs for the Rose Bowl Shuttle, just a couple of blocks from the station. When you reach the shuttle, see how long the lines are. If they are long, and you are in the mood for a walk, just follow the folks in yellow and green, or whatever your team colors are, who are walking the 1.75 mile route (@ 40 minutes) to the stadium.

The advice to drive to Union Station and park for the Gold Line is good. However, if you do want to drive into Pasadena, it does not have to be a complete ordeal. Just stay away from the area near the beginning of the parade route and the area of the Rose Bowl-- that is to say, the WESTERN part of Pasadena. The area to the east, near Hill or Allen, should not be too bad.

One possible approach:

5 north to 710 north.

Stay on the 710 until it ends at Valley Blvd.

Turn Right on Valley Blvd.

Turn Left on Atlantic. Continue north on Atlantic, which after Huntington Drive will be called Los Robles. Continue on Los Robles to California Blvd.

Turn Right on California.

Turn Left on Allen, and within a few blocks, start looking for a parking place on a residential street where there are no time limits.

I haven't driven the freeway section of this, but we do the "surface street" section of this drive every year, and there isn't too much traffic until you get north of California.
