Which area to stay with a family in February?
Save

We are planning a winter getaway to Palm Springs towards the end of Februar. 2016. Our group consists of 6 adults and two children ages 7 and 4. We've only been there once before many years ago without children. I would like to know the best area to book a vacation rental. We like to be close to grocery stores, malls and good family hiking trails. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

This is the site we've always used to find condos in the desert.

If you mean "close to grocery stores, malls and good family hiking trails" by car, any place will do usually. I don't know that I would be looking for walkable to such things. I'd pick a nice condo first and then worry about the rest after.

If you narrow down to three or four places you can come back to the forum and ask about location.

We often stay in Condos in Palm Desert and have used VRBO (vrbo.com) for over a dozen years with great success with our family of 6. There are many condos with 3 bedrooms 3 baths and sofa beds. If you need more bedrooms you should look for a private home. We like the gated golf condo resorts as they have many pools dotted all over the property, many include bikes and pool toys. These can be located anywhere near Cook and Country Club Dr. where there are shopping areas that have a big market, pharmacy, several restaurants, and small shops.

The Living Desert and Zoo in PD is a great place to visit and begin a hike. You can drive to the canyons, etc. good to start early as Feb is a popular time to visit.

If you are planning on going during school vacation time, you should get something right this minute. Places book a year in advance or more. I would suggest Palm Desert Marriott Properties as they seem to get a lot of families at their resorts You can walk to Ralph's grocery store and some restaurants from their locations. I would heed above poster advise and get the condo first. If you don't like driving there is good bus service around the desert towns.

February 2016 is super busy! Definitely book asap.

Yeah Palm Springs is packed with grocery stores, Trader Joe's, etc.,, they'll be easy to find everywhere.

Most places will just be a 10 minute drive whether it be to the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway or the Tahquitz canyon hiking. Even Joshua Tree National Park is only about 50 minutes away should you decide to venture there one day.

The way I see it, you have way more adults than kids...

So you want to walk to shops and restaurants so the area of Kaiser Grille restaurant - same street that VillageFest takes place on (don't miss it on Thursday nights) & walking distance to the Art museum.... good general area, close to everything and where some of your party could go out at night and not even have to drive. But super advice above on many great places to stay too!

Hotels? Consider: Casa Cody, Hyatt Palm Springs, Andreas Hotel & Spa, The Chase Hotel of Palm Springs, Hilton Palm Springs...

Vacation rentals in same area - a few ideas.... (VRBO charges no rental fees)

...Many more in this general area on the website.

I like the vacation rentals in Old Las Palmas area. For me that is one of my favorite areas to walk around when I'm in Palm Springs.

We are definitely looking for a home rather than a hotel. Someone had suggested the Rancho Mirage area. Another suggestion was to stay in the south sine the north part town was very windy. Walking distance to the downtown is not a primary requisite for our group, but hiking and being close to grocery stores is.
