6 days in Palm Springs - Dec 2012- itinerary look OK?

We (family of 4 with daughters 14 and 11) will be in the Palm Springs area from 12/22-12/28/12. I have been browsing TA and researching the web to make plans for our trip. We enjoy the outdoors and love hiking. Here is what I have come up with so far -

1 day for the PS Aerial Tramway and hikes at Mount Jacinto State Park

1 day at Joshua Tree National Park

1 day at Indian Canyons

1 day at Anza Borrego State Park

1 day at the Coachella Valley Preserve

1 day doing one of those ATV/Pink Jeep Tours

Here are my questions

- How does this sound? Is this too ambitious for 6 days?

- What are the recommended hikes in these locations? We are easily able to hike 6-8 miles a day.

- Is it realistic to think that we can hike at these locations in December - especially at Mount Jacinto State Park?

- How easy is it to drive without a 4WD to and within Anza Borrego? I really want to go to the Pumpkin Patch - is that possible without a 4WD?

- Any recommendations for what would be the best trip on one of those ATV tours? San Andreas Fault or Split Mountain Gorge at Anza Borrego (goes also to the wind caves and sandstone canyon) or the Mecca Hills and Painted/Ladder Canyon? Any thoughts on which would be the most difficult to do on our own, making it a good trip to do with an ATV and guide?

Thanks for all your help

I would ask where they see the sunset from. Is it up in Joshua Tree or down in the valley near Palm Springs somewhere?

Agree that The Living Desert should be included. Very good place to walk and see animals in spacious living areas.

We just returned from a week in Palm Desert. Be sure to see Wild Lights at the

Living Desert during the Holiday season. It's really a special activity with the family.

CANative: What time do you have to be at The Living Desert to see the holiday lights? We're thinking of going there this Tuesday... but not sure whether to arrive early in the morning or later in the afternoon.

Sounds like if we arrive early, then we'll be able to feed the giraffes.

But later, the lights will probably be more lovely, right?

WildLights opens from 6 PM to 9 PM, and the cost is $10 for adults and $8 for children. They only turn the lights on in the evenings. We go to an early dinner then over to the Living Desert.

I believe they won't be open again until Thursday this week, as they are not opened 7 days a week.

Thanks, CAnative. It looks like we'll miss WildLights as we won't be around on Thursday.

Finally the time is here! We leave for our trip to Palm Springs at the end of the week. Does anyone have an update re the conditions at the top of the tramway? Is there a lot of snow. Is it possible to hike or is it snowed in?

Our new itinerary is -

Day 1- Indian Canyons

Day 2- Anza Borrego

Day 3- Joshua tree National Park

Day 4- Tahquitz canyon, Coachela Valley Preserve

Day 5 - Living Desert

Day 6- Aerial Tramway and Mt Jacinto State Park.

Does that sound OK? Any additional tips/feedback?

Here are some live cams to see the current conditions at the top of the tram. Bring a warm jacket.

While you are down at Anza Borrego, drive around Borrego Springs and check out the art sculptures around town. They are pretty interesting.
