Christmas in Palm Springs with family of 13

Planning to rent a house to accomodate all of us - 8 adults, 5 children aged 2-13. Have been checking out different rental sites - appears to be lots to rent. Re area: my husband and I stayed in Palm Springs last year and really liked it (early January). Now need to decide between Palm Springs, La Quinta, Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage. Am concerned about the "cold winds" - which area would be the least windy? Want to be within walking distance of restaurants...advice? Thanks, Gail Casey

The more windy areas are the north end of Palm Springs and closer to Interstate 10. Generally, the closer to the mountain you are,the less wind there is.

Trying to be within walking distance of a number of restaurants will lower the number of available places right off the bat.

You could try for places around downtown PS, the neighborhoods near the Rancho Mirage restaurant row/River shopping center area, neighborhoods near El Paseo in Palm Desert or near old town La Quinta.

This site can help with showing you the neighborhoods in PS, if a listing gives the name of an area, like Mesa district, or Racquet Club...

Good info from Dez. Stay away from I-10 and close to the mountains to avoid wind. For walking to restaurants and services choose downtown Palm Springs, but accept that you'll use cars to get just about everywhere you'll want to go, everyday.

Really, staying in Palm Spring downtown area is the only place where you will be close enough to walk to the shops and restaurants. We've stayed at Rancho Las Palmas, and the River Entertainment Center, is the only place close enough that we can walk to. When we stay in La Quinta, we still have to get in the car to get to Old Town or restaurants in Palm Desert.
