best fish markets and take out BBQ restaurants

We like to cook in when we go to the beach. Where can I find good fish markets (shrimp, fish, scallops, etc) and where can I find a good take out BBQ place? Also, where are the best super markets and where are the liquor stores-----all on the Newport peninsula?

The BEST fish in the area is from Santa Monica Seafood in Costa Mesa

www.santamonicaseafood.com/content/costa-mesa

This is where most of the good restaurants get their fish. I go there frequently.

You can't get better fish anywhere. It is just off of Newport Blvd. at 17th Street.

Drive up Newport Blvd from the Penninsula, cross Pacific Coast Highway and drive up about 1 mile to 17th street. Turn right and you will see SM Seafood on the left. Turn left at the first street past Newport Blvd to get into the parking lot.

There is a BBQ place across 17th from SM Seafood but I haven't tried it.

There are several grocery stores on the Penninsula but I recommend that after you go to SM Seafood you cross Newport Blvd and stop at Trader Joe's on 17th and Growers' Direct on 17 and Superior. Growers' Direct has excellent produce at fantastic prices.

Here's a BBQ place. beachpitbbq.com/locations/costa-mesa.aspx

Information only. I've never tried it and since I'm not a BBQ fan, probably never will.

Sorry we're not more helpful on the BBQ. But nobody comes here to have take out Southern Style BBQ. What we call barbecue is our backyard grill.

For good fresh fish I'd look at both Whole Foods and Bristol Farms in Newport Center/Fashion Island.

If you want really fresh fish on the peninsula go to the dory fleet fish market next to the Newport Pier when the ships come in with their daily catch.

Orange County is not noted for its BBQ, really not in Newport Beach. The Newport Rib Company is about as good as it gets and it is just better than average.

South LA has some great BBQ spots.

scott -- while WF and BF are OK for fish if you happen to be there anyway, and they have what you want, their selection is not nearly as good as Santa Monica Seafood and their prices are higher. I get my fish at Whole Foods when I don't feel like driving down to SM Seafood. But since these people will be only 5 minutes from SM Seafood, that would be my first recommendation.

You might check the Sunday Farmers Market at Lido Marina Vllage at the top of the Peninsula (near the Lido Theather). You might find some surprises in that area.

@LSCats, while I love the selection at Santa Monica Seafood, I find that prices at Whole Foods are better. e.g. $28/lb for black cod at Santa Monica Seafood vs $18-20/lb for black cod at Whole Foods.

Santa Monica Seafood will definitely be closer for these travelers.

The Crab Cooker on Balboa Blvd. sells fresh fish in its display case.

There are no large liquor stores on the peninsula. I would suggest you drive to High Time Liquor store in Costa Mesa. It is on Ogle St. just off 17th St. It will blow your mind away with the variety and price of booze. They also have a basement that has wine from all over the world. It is hugh!
