Is downtown Napa a good choice?

I have March reservations for the Blackbird Inn, but lately I've been reading some guidebooks that seems to suggest Napa may not be the best place to stay (tired, depressed, etc.). Admittedly, these books are a few years old. What is Napa like these days? Should I be looking at other areas instead? My interests are good food and interesting surroundings (natural or architectural). Thanks for the advice.

I don't know how old your guidebooks are but Napa has changed a lot in the last few years. The Oxbow has transformed a previously unsightly area that was avoided:

The downtown area has been rejuvenated with the building of the Napa Riverfront:

And, the area now known as the "West End" has reinvented itself in the past two years and changes are still taking place:

Not sure what you are looking for but Napa is a different beast from what it was just a few years ago.

If you want another area, Yountville is a very nice place to stay with some excellent restaurants. Enjoy the wine country! :).
