Napa to San Fransisco

Hi Napa Valley

we are touring from Australia next year and spending a few days in the Napa Valley during our 3 month trip.

We will be travelling with friends and have a car between the 4 of us. However after Napa they will be staying on with the car for a few more days and we want to get to San Fransisco. They can obviously drop us to a transport terminal in the area. My question is there public transport - bus, train, ferry that will get us into the city area with luggage? Just wondering from local experience what mode of transport to take.

Time of the required transfer is 25th July - I know its a long way off but planning is half the fun.

Many thanks - happy drinking from wine lovers from Coonawarra South Australia

Sure, there are several ways to get into the city. If they can drive you to Vallejo, you can go on the ferry:

There's a bus that goes to the ferry but it's really slow unless you take an express bus which only operates during commute hours on weekdays. The commuter bus also goes to BART.

Another option is the Amtrak bus which leaves Napa at 12:30 each day and takes you to Martinez where you board a train that takes you to Richmond where you can transfer to BART to go to SF.

Probably the best idea would be for your friends to take you into the city. Maybe you could plan an outing for that day to visit Muir Woods or the Marin Headlands and Golden Gate Bridge and then have them drop you off in San Francisco.

Thanks for the suggestions. Or friends will be joining us in SF later so a bit hesitant to get them to drive us there. What is the BART?

Thanks again

BART is Bay Area Rapid Transit. It's the commuter train/subway system. You can look at the BART system map at www.bart.org. As suggested, your friend can drive you to Vallejo where you can take a ferry into SF. Napa to Vallejo is about 15 miles.
