Need Advice on Napa - Hotel & Hot Ballooning

Looking for a hotel during our stay in Oct in Napa. What is the best choice between Vintage Inn, Yountville Inn and Napa Valley Lodge? Other hotel suggestions are most welcome.

For taking a hot balloon excursion, is the Bonadventura Ballooning Company reliable and with good services?

October is one of the "peak" months for tourism, since all of the wineries are busy "crushing" their grapes and making wine. Thousands of folks from all over the world come here to join in the fun of the "crush", and this can lead to traffic jams, and long lines at some of the valley's most popular wineries (hint: find someone who can show you how to plan your day so you don't wind up wasting it sitting in traffic or waiting in long lines at the wineries).

Many of the lodging facilities in Napa are 100% booked already for every weekend in October (ours included), so if you have the flexibility to stay midweek, you'll have better luck in finding overnight accomodations. Things slow down a bit Nov-Mar, when you'll be able to book lodging less than 6-8 weeks out.

As regards ballooning, keep in mind that all of the balloons go up very, very early in the morning (around 5 or 6 am), since the outside air is cooler at this hour (making the hot air balloon more bouyant, and much easier to keep up). Also, some of the balloon companies will make door-to-door pick ups and drop offs at some of the more popular inns-- this is a wonderful convenience, as it allows you to sleep another hour or so, and you don't have to drive around in the wee hours half awake trying to find the balloon place! So be sure you ask any balloon company you book with if they offer this service.

Also, bear in mind if the weather here is foggy, the balloon co. will take you to another valley further inland, where conditions are more favorable for flying (but you may not see any vineyards). Even if you don't wind up floating over acres of grapes, a balloon ride is still an incredible once-in-a-lifetime thrill.

Lastly, some of the Bed & Breakfast Inns (including ours) offer package discounts for folks who stay at our inns and go ballooning or on the Wine Train. So call around-- you may get some extra services, insider's tips, and save money, all at the same time.

Enjoy your stay in our wonderful valley,
