Family-Friendly, Affordable Hotel Near Beach?

Hello,

We are planning a week in Monterey with our 8 and 10 yr olds. We want to relax, play on the beach, and take it easy - take in the aquarium, and just take each day as it comes.

We're looking for a family-friendly, really affordable hotel within walking distance from the beach. We'll rent a car if we get a hankering for sight seeing further out, but for the most part, just want to take it easy.

Any recommendations for hotels, motels, bed & breakfasts near the beach that are reasonably priced?

Ypu'll have to define "reasonable" in US $ for us. Also exactly when are you planning to visit?

How are you planning to get to Monterey if you don't rent a car?

Consider the Best Western Beach Resort. It is on the beach, great for families, and about a 10-15 minute drive from most places on the peninsula.

If you want to be within walking distance of things, the Portola is downtown, near Fishermans Wharf. There is a pretty good beach about 5-10 min walk from the hotel. You can also easily walk or bike also round Monterey.

The Beach Resort is right on the ocean and is very family-friendly with a great heated pool and jacuzzi. :).

While the Monterey Beach Resort is one of the few affordable beachfront hotels around here, it doesn't meet the criteria of being within walking distance of other places of interest. For that you'll need a place either downtown or on Cannery Row.

However, most of the downtown and Cannery Row shoreline isn't beachfront property. There are some tiny beaches between the aquarium and the wharf, and one large beach east of downtown, but mostly it's either rocky shoreline, commercial buildings, or the harbor that dominates Monterey's shore. So you need to have realistic expectations.

On Cannery Row the affordable options are the Best Western Victorian Inn and the Holiday Inn Express, but they're more motels than hotels, both within two blocks of the shore.

Monterey is a very walkable town, but if you're spending an entire week, you'll want to take advantage of everything the area has to offer, so a car is highly recommended. You'll need one to get to Point Lobos or any of our other beautiful parks. You'll also want a car to see Carmel and its two spectacular beaches, which are the best beaches around here for families to play on (see www.montereypeninsula.info/guide/beaches.htm ). You can get to Carmel by transit bus from downtown Monterey, but to see the beaches will require a fair amount of walking without a car.

The OP's post is a little ambiguous regarding the car and walking, so hopefully the OP will return and clear that up. Upon first reading, I understood that the OP will have a car and wanted to be within walking distance of the beach. If this is the case, then the Beach Resort seems to fit the bill perfectly - on the beach, so perfect for those days when they just want to hang out, but close enough for easy drives around the peninsula for sightseeing. On second reading though, it appears that the OP may only rent a car as needed, in which case a hotel within walking distance of sights and restaurants is more important than being right on the beach.

As Mr Toy said, Monterey isn't big on sandy beaches, so the OP may or may not be able to get everything she is looking for. "Really affordable" may be an issue as well.

We always stay at the Monterey Bay Lodge. Nothing fancy, but affordable, has a pool and is right across from the beach and Dennis the Menace park. You can easily walk to downtown and the wharf. Rent bikes and it's an easy ride along the coastal trail to Cannery Row and the Aquarium. Rent a car for the day and see Point Lobos early.....don't miss it!

You might also want to consider Andril Fireplace Cottages or Bide A Wee Cottages in neighboring Pacific Grove. Both are located in a woodsy area, but close to PG's shoreline and Asilomar Beach. Because it's a woodsy area, you'll often see deer grazing on hotel grounds and the yards of nearby homes. However... you would definitely need a car, as there is little else around these properties.

You don't say when you're visiting, so keep in mind that summer is high season and affordable and summer would be an oxymoron. It will be even worse if a popular seasonal event occurs at the time of your planned visit.

Bide A Wee is very affordable and comfortable. We really enjoyed our time there and the area is beautiful where it is located. :).
