Best spot in Monterey to catch sunset?

Is it all pretty much the same or is there one specific point that's better to catch sunset? I'll be getting there in the evening for a one night stay and may not have a lot of time to scout a spot. Looking for the best place to photograph actually.

Thanks!

Oh yeah, and I think bagpipes are irritating, so not there for sure...

1) Asilomar/Pacific Grove Beach Area - stunning (Free to drive there; as spectacular as 17 mile drive.)

2) 17 mile drive (those famous pictures you see in this area are photographed here.)

3) Pt. Lobos State Reserve - (issue can sometimes be finding a place to park, but absoultely beautiful area to take a picture from.)

All of the above will do quite nicely. Enjoy!

mini,

Thanks so much for your advice. Can one easily walk along the beach in these areas as well, or is it restricted/difficult to get onto the beaches? Any one beach cleaner/prettier than others?

Thanks!

The best place to walk on the beach is Carmel.

I agree that Point Lobos is the jewel of the entire area (and no bagpipes!). If you're up to it, park outside on the road and walk the perimeter trail, just a little over 6 miles.

If you want to watch a sunset while sipping a cocktail, try Rocky Point. You can sit outside on the cliffs and the views are fantastic.

Just to clarfiy, Carmel Beach is also a beautiful spot to watch the sunset. If you would like to have a nice, long watch on the beach while you watch, Carmel Beach is definitely what you're looking for. Lots of great local dogs being walked by local people there too.

What time of year are you visiting. Don't be surprised of the fog beats you to the sunset.

EricT,

June to the locals is known for the June Gloom. You can never really tell around Monterey. Some spots will be absolutley beautiful and around the next turn could be foggy. Good luck and no matter what, have fun!!!!

Eric T, Just wanted to second the vote for Asilomar. It's a pretty good beach for walking on if the tide is out. And if you have kids they would love to explore the tide pools. You may notice on a map, many beaches in Monterey do not actually face west, so you have to go a little south of Monterey for the best sunsets!
