Yosemite to Monterey travel tips and advice please

As part of our honeymoon tour we are stoping over for one night at Monterey. at the best western beach resort ( Sand Dunes Road)1st of July.

Doing a search for directions i've found these : -

CA-140 toward CR-121A/Eagle Peak

CA-140

CA-152 W

CA-156

CA-1 S

Is this the best route to take?

We hope to get out on the beach for a few hours in the afternoon and we'd like to visit the aquarium as well.

How long should we give to the aquarium?

Also we will be doing the 17mile drive the next day when we leave for Sanat Barbara..

Do they have shops near the hotel and somewhere to eat like a buffet place?

Any tips and adivce would be great please .

Thank you

Scott

Where are you staying in Yosemite? If you are staying in the valley, then 140 is the best route out. If you are staying in points south, like Wawona or Fish Camp, then 41 is your best route out.

From 140 you continue to 99S, then connect with 152 W and finally 1 S.

We just had a very nice weekend in Monterey last weekend, and spent about 4 hours at the Aquarium. If you don't get tickets ahead of time, be prepared for a bit of a wait to get your tickets to enter, especially on a weekend.

From el portel, you will take the 140. In Merced you will take the 99 south to 152 west to the 156 (its a left hand turn and sign will say Hollister) to the 101 south and then back on the 156 to the 1 south to monterey. It sounds confusing, but the transitions are pretty easy and clearly marked. This will take you about 4 hours.

The aquarium can take as little or long as you like. With the price of admission, you might want to spend a couple of hours there! I am not familiar with restaurants near your hotel, but there are quite a few nice reseasonable places in Monterey. search forums for restaurants, there's been lots of posts. I don't know about buffets.

We have enjoyed many stays at the Beach Resort over the years, it is a nice place and right on the ocean. There is a restaurant right at the hotel with good food and oceanviews. If you want a nice place for dinner, Tarpey's Roadhouse is great and just a few minutes from your hotel.

We did the aquarium in Dec. of 2005 and spent a little over a couple of hours there. July will be much more crowded. Take your time, enjoy the exhibits and take it all in. There is a restaurant we like not too far from the aquarium called Schooner's Bistro at the Monterey Plaza Hotel. You can dine outside on the patio and the food is very good here, we like the fish and chips at Schooner's. They also have a more formal venue, The Duck Club where we enjoyed dinner our last visit a few months ago.

There are no shops near the hotel, they have a small gift shop at the Beach Resort and you will be about a 5 minute drive to downtown Monterey from your hotel. :)

Do get your aquarium tickets ahead of time. I usually just telephone and put them on my credit card and they are waiting for us at will call. Standing in the long lines to buy them is something to avoid. You may even be able to do this online...we live just 45 minutes away so I have used the telephone. Go to their website and check that out. It must be something like montereybayaquarieum.org....(or mabye.com).
