Monterey to Pismo beach tomorrow - what route?

Hi,

We’re currently in Monterey driving to Pismo Beach area tomorrow. Happy to take our time and take in the sights but slightly confused by the road closures and the google maps route looks pretty uninspiring.

What route should I take and what kind of spots are good to stop along the way?

Thanks and sorry for the short notice!

Highway 1 is still closed for driving through. No choice but to use US-101 freeway to go south. You can drive on CA-1 past Carmel to sight-see in the Big Sur areas, maybe as far south as McWay Falls, which is what we usually recommend, and backtrack to Carmel/Monterey to use CA-68 to Salinas then on to US-101 south.

Have you already seen Big Sur? If so, there are some places worth stopping along 101 (as HappyFeet says, it's basically the only route from Monterey to Pismo Beach): San Juan Bautista to see an old Mission, Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo, detour to San Simeon to see Hearst Castle and the elephant seal rookery.

But if you haven't seen Big Sur, make that your priority, and figure on getting into Pismo Beach late in the day.

Thanks! So I should go as far south as I can on CA1 then backtrack up to Monterey and cut across to 101.

Then take 46 West to CA1 and up to San Simeon. Then south again on CA1 to Pismo. Sounds like a plan!

Are there any tolls on this route?

No tolls anywhere near this route. And you are correct about the route.

You don't need to go as far as you can down Highway 1. You only need to go as far as McWay Falls at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. Even that adds at least 3 hours down and back to your drive.
