Mojave airport tour

Has anyone done this tour? The website implies it is fairly random whether it happens or not. What is your experience?

Thanks,

Pam

I haven't done the tour but have flown my plane to Mojave and was already "inside the fence". Until 9/11 you could wander around freely, now security is much tighter. There are a lot of interesting planes, both airlines in storage and experimental aircraft such as the Virgin spacecraft. Best bet is to email the airport management and ask them.

FYI if your interest is the airliners, another large storage facility is 100km east at Victorville Airport (VCV). No tours as far as I know but you can explore perimeter roads and get decent views (try to bring binoculars). Security will often drive up; many of the guards are informative and chatty since they are bored and realize you're not a security threat.

In fact you can see some of the planes just driving by the airport - We've taken a detour a few times through the Mojave to see the airport, on the way from San Diego to Mammoth.

Thanks for the replies. We will try the instructions on the airport website and report back.

Just for other people's info...

We turned up to a near empty airport (Sat) and ended up having to phone them from outside the building to ask if they were open for tours. The chap who does the refuelling does the tour and he wAS out and about. We had breakfast and waited about an hour.

When it finally got underway it was great! He drives you along all the buildings and tells you who owns them and what they are researching. Then you head over to the boneyard and storage field. You can't get out and you can't use your camera (shame) but it is good he tells you what films have been filmed and where (eg Con Air, Air Force 1). We really enjoyed it - but it is only good if you have a special interest.

Cheers,

Pam
