Trip to RedWood Park from Sacramento

I will have a family trip to Redwood Park in next few days from Sacramento. Here is my "original" plan. Day1: arrive SMT at 11 (from LA), drive via fwy 80, 29, 128 and to fwy 101 ( we like to see what the "Napa-Wine Country" looks like). If possible, cruise through "Avenue of the Giant" and stay at Eurica on the first night Day2: take "tall tree grove" hike via Orick. go to Gold Bluffs Beach , Fern Cyn... and all the way noth to Crescent City , overnite stay at ????? Day 3: spend whole day in Jedediah park and stay Eurica again Day 4. headback to SMT via 101 , 80 and talke the last flight to LA at 9 pm. Can any one advise me Q1. If I like to include the coast line route hwy 1 to this trip at the first day and tour Napa valley on the fouth day. What wil be the best route to enter hwy1 from SMT and see the best part of coast line. Q 2. should I stay all 3 nites in Eurica or stay at Crescent City on the 2nd nite ? Q3 what be the best route to "drive through" Napa valley and get connected to fwy 101? Thanks !!!!

It's a long way from Sacramento to Eureka, about 7 or 8 hours if you want to see the Napa Valley or the coast and the Avenue of the Giants. It can be done, but Napa Valley would be easier on the first day.

Skip the Tall Trees Grove, you need to get a permit to drive there, or take the bus, and then it is a steep mile down (and back up) to the Tall Tree, and the Tall Tree is no longer even close to being the tallest redwood. It lost its top decades ago. The current tallest is in Prairie Creek Redwoods (part of Redwood National Park), but is not marked or advertised in any way. Hike the Nature Trail at Prairie Creek.

If you're going to Crescent City you will not want to go all the way back to Eureka, this is almost 100 miles and Jedediah Smith is just outside Crescent City.

Thanks a lot for your quick response. I will change my 2nd nite stay to Crescent city. Should I give up tour to Mendocino since it may take a long drive from either SMF or Eurica. How much time I need to go there.

We just (last night!) got back from a 5-day trip similar to what you have planned. It worked out well for us, but it was a ton of tretcherous driving. the biggest problem is that if you don't want to backtrack, the last leg is long and boring without much to look at or do. It went like this:

day 1: Sacramento airport at 5pm. Drove to Cloverdale. Took highways southwest, then northeast. Easy drive, some traffic. Got in about 9pm (stayed at Tea Tree inn-I recommend).

days 2&3: stayed in cloverdale for Sierra Navada Music fest in Boonville. Saw wineries (Coppola's is really cool). Drove 129 back and forth to Boonville. About an hour each way. Hard the first time, not bad after that AND not nearly as bad as what was to come.

Day 4: Boonville to Mendicino. Best redwood grove in CA at Hendy woods. Beautiful difficult drive on higway 1 and 101, but wonderful and worth it. Took about 2 hours (stayed at Mcullam house-I recommend).

Day 5: Mendicino to Ferndale. OK drive, went through avenue of the giants. Worth every minute. Ferndale is silly. Took all day because we stopped a lot. Stayed at Collingwood Inn (very nice innkeepeers-I also recommend)

Day 6: looked at Eureka, shopped in Arcata, and took 299 over to Redding. Very long twisty, tiring drive. Thought it would never end. Stock up on snacks and coffee at the Co-op. Exceptionally beautiful. Took 4 hours with few stops. Then took 5 to Scramento and stayed overnight at Cache Creek Casino. Very nice, if a little smoke is OK with you. Won 62 bucks. Took 3 1/2 hours to get there. Ate dinner and went to bed. Easy trip 20 minutes to airport in the morning.

One last thing: Something that helped us a lot was to make a copy of a map of the area and mapquest driving distances and times of everywhere you want to go and write them on the map. They are pretty accurate and it gives you a better idea of how long things will take.

Thanks a lot for your input and advise. We already came back from 4 days Redwood NP trip. Due to the limited time, from Sacramento, we took I-5 S, I-80 W and Hwy 29 N to Hwy 101. We missed the chance to see the beautiful coast line this time. You note is very useful. We will defenitely try that route next time.
