surfing and sealions

This might sound a bit silly but here it goes....When we visited Malibu last winter we noticed a sealion swimming in the water near people that were in kayaks. I thought it was a pretty cool sight to see and what made it kind of funny was that the kayakers didn't even notice him and he was pretty close to them for about 3 mins. A few days later we were in San Diego and my husband was surfing and a sealion was swimming really close to him. The sealion was swimming in the curl of the wave (and doing a much better job then my husband was with his surfing skills!!!) Is it safe to be so close to them or is it best to keep your distance?

Even though they look playful, you need to remember that they are wild animals and we need to keep them that way.

Most sea lions will not confront a human unless they are cornered or threatened.

There have been reported cases along the CA coast and especailly in some bays of sea lions infected with toxix algae. This toxic algae may have contributed to some irradic behavior of some of the amimals.

It's not a good idea to go swimming with them. If one comes around then keep a safe distance. Some of them are 1000lbs so you wouldn't want to confront that.
