Best area to stay 1 night in Mid-March

We (a senior couple) will be coming to LA by Amtrak in mid March. We've never spent any time there and would like to be able to walk and ride a tour bus to see the sights. In which area should we spend our 1 night? Thank you.

The tour bus main depot is in Hollywood. If you arrive by Amtrak at Union Station, at Union Station you can switch to the Red Line subway and take it to the touristy center of Hollywood (about 25 minutes) at the Hollywood / Highland station, which is at Hollywood Blvd. and Highland Ave. Star Line Tours (www.starlinetours.com) is LA's largest tour provider and they stage their tours from in front of the Chinese Theater which is right next to the above intersection. There are many hotels near the above intersection spanning a range of prices - Loew's Hollywood and the Hollywood Roosevelt are on the higher end. Places like the Hollywood Celebrity, Orchid Suites and the Motel 6 are least expensive. In between are the Hilton Garden Inn Hollywood, the Holiday Inn Express Walk of Fame, and the Magic Castle Hotel, along with a few other choices.

Thank you. This sounds perfect for us. Can we get to the beach (to walk along) from here, too? Thanks again.

You can, but generally would take two buses. From Hollywood / Highland, bus 217 or 780 west on Hollywood blvd. Bus will turn south onto Fairfax Ave. Exit at Fairfax Ave. and Santa Monica Blvd. From there take bus 704 or 4 west on Santa Monica blvd. Exit at 4th St. and Broadway Ave. in Santa Monica. Short walk to the beach and the pier from there.

Note also if you elect to do the hop on/hop off tour from Star Line, you can use the red loop bus (leaves from the Chinese Theater next to Hollywood Blvd. and Highland Ave.) and when the bus gets to Beverly Hills, switch to the Yellow Loop bus. The Yellow loop will stop by the same beach as above.

Thank you again. The Hop On/Hop Off sounds good. They're always a good way to see a city. You have really helped us.

I highly recommend you take the HOHO to Santa Monica. You'll enjoy the beach, pier, and 3rd St. Promenade. Try to get to the small aquarium beneath the pier. It's small but educational, nicely done.
