Where to stay?

We have a stopover in LAX on our way home from NYC. We arrive 5pm on the Friday night and depart early Sunday evening. We have been to LA before and have visited Disneyland and Hollywood etc. we did not visit Santa Monica, Venice beach. Trying to decide on a hotel a) nearby to SM and Venice which all seem very costly or b) stay near airport (at a lesser cost) and use taxi to get to Santa Monica area. Any ideas??

Look at the Custom Hotel by LAX (free shuttle) and then use a taxi to get to Santa Monica.

You can also take the #3 Santa Monica bus from the Custom Hotel to downtown Santa Monica ($1.50, runs every 30 minutes (from 6:22 am) with returns as late as 11:16 pm. The bus also stops on the way at at the corner of LIncoln Bl & Washington Bl from which you can transfer to a second bus to the Venice Pier (a 4-minute ride).

Our TOP QUESTIONS BOX at right has a section on public transit that explains how to look up transit routes without having to fuss with maps. The Custom Hotel is a highly-rated 3.5-star hotel in a pleasant residential neighborhood with dining and a supermarket (with take away food) nearby.

Taking a taxi each way will cost about $50 so if you can find a hotel that is not too much more expensive than the Custom, it might be worth staying in SM or Venice. (The Custom Hotel, as you'll learn. isn't the cheapest airport hotel but it is very nice and in an area that doesn't feel like it's near the airport).

The other option is to stay in Venice or Santa Monica and take a bus between LAX and the hotel or a taxi (but you'll only need one return trip).

You haven't indicated your exact travel dates but your other thread says you'll be visiting in July. It might be hard to find something inexpensive at the beach on such short notice but here are some ideas:

1. BEST WESTERN PLUS Gateway Hotel Santa Monica -- check rates at BestWestern.com (Enter Santa Monica, CA as the location you're looking for).

2. Comfort Inn Santa Monica. Go here for offers from various online reservation services (Be sure to change the check in and check out dates as needed):

Inn at Playa del Rey, 5 minutes from LAX, is a lovely B&B near the beach, overlooks Marina del Rey.

You really don't want to stay by the airport theres nothing there. Also if your planning on commuting from around LAX to Santa Monica you will experience the true LA experience of God awful traffic. Do yourself a favor, look into some cheaper hotels in the Santa monica area for around 150 a night. While most of LA is not walking accessible Santa Monica is somewhat and its just nice to be near the beach and have the ocean air. Furthermore, Santa Monica has a very chill and young vibe with a lot of really cool bars. Feel free to hit me back if you want restaurant, club, bar, or any other tips as I spend a lot of time in Santa Monica. Enjoy Your trip.

What is your actual budget for those two nights? Will you get a car? When is this trip?

The above poster notes hotels for $150 in Santa Monica, but that only exists if booked far in advance, during the off-season.

thanks to all Trip Advisors for advice it has given me some good food for thought. There the 26-28 July. Do like the thought of staying in Santa Monica and have been able to find a more reasonable price with the above mentioned hotels. At this stage we are not going to have a vehicle but things may change!
