Yes, there are bike rental shops all up and down the bike path. They are everywhere. Rental fees vary from shop to shop, but average about $20/day or a little more. If you use google with the words "bike rental Venice Beach" you'll see a map of all the shops:

Where are you actually staying? Without knowing that, I would suggest starting in Santa Monica. MDR is some distance from SM.

The boardwalk in Venice is quite gritty now. When in Venice, be sure to check out Abbott Kinney Blvd. Very lively street and pleasant contrast to the boardwalk.

Lots of bike rentals along the bike path and along Lincoln Blvd. in Venice, too. I'm not sure about MDR.

We'll probably start from Marina Del Rey (because we're staying in the aera for only 2 nights) so half day would be nice.

Daniel's Bike Rental is in Fisherman's Village which is in the southeast corner of Marina del Rey:

http://danielsbikerentals.com/

The reason why someone asked where you were staying in Marina del Rey is two-fold:

1. To locate a shop nearby to where you're staying.

2. Because many of the bicycle hire shops require that you return the bicycle to their shop, not to a different location. So, if you plan to ride in only one direction, then you'll need to take public transit back to your starting point (the buses accept bicycles) or use a bike shop that has a branch in Santa Monica so that you can drop the bicycle there.

Here's the bike route from Daniel's to the Santa Monica Pier in downtown Santa MonicaL

http://mapq.st/ZJMhd8

It's about a 30-minute ride if you don't stop at all.

As far as returning the bicycle via public transit, the return route from the Pier requires taking 2 buses in succession. The following routing is for a midday weekday transfer (weekend routes might differ):

Starting at SANTA MONICA PIER

1. At 1:15 pm, Walk/bike to the 'land end' of the Pier and continue walking/biking east on Colorado Av to the NW corner of Colorado Av & 4th Street. (a 13 minute walk or 2 minute ride).

2. Ride Santa Monica Rapid #3 bus [marked 'BLUE RAPID'] heading south

From: 4TH ST/COLORADO AV NW corner Leave: 01:36PM

To: SW corner of LINCOLN BLVD/MARINA POINTE DR corner Arrive: 01:53PM

Pay $1.00 + $0.50 for Transfer to onward bus

3. Transfer to Culver City #7 bus [marked 'LINE 7 CULVER BL/ MARINA DEL REY'] heading south

From: SW corner of LINCOLN BLVD/MAXELLA AV Leave: 02:20PM

To: FIJI WY/FISHERMANS VILLAGE Ar: 02:25PM

Use Transfer ticket from previous bus as fare

Notice that there is a 30-minute layover at the transfer point between the 2 buses at this particular time of day. You could easily ride your bicycles the remaining distance (the route covered by the second bus) in 5 minutes. Here's a map: http://mapq.st/Y069y9

If you DO decide to ride only the first bus, simply pay the $1 fare for this bus.

If you'd rather pick up the bicycle at one shop and drop it at another, the only chain of shops that allows this, to my knowledge is Perry's. Here's their website:

http://www.perryscafe.com/#/BeachRentals/

Here's a map of all of their locations: http://www.perryscafe.com/PerrysMap.htm

(Note: their southern-most location is at the Venice Pier -- more on this, below. It is the closest location to Marina del Rey. The northern most locations are in Santa Monica including a location at Santa Monica Pier called "Blazing Saddles").

To reach the Venice Pier from Marina del Rey, we need to know where you're staying in Marina del Rey or you can look up public transit routes yourself (or perhaps, you're staying with someone who can drop you off). For instructions on looking up public transit routes, see our TOP QUESTIONS BOX at the right side of this page. Click on "Public transit..." and then "Local Transportation Overview". In order to look up a route, you'll need the starting point (address of where you're staying), ending point (Venice Pier) and the day of the week and time of day.

Have fun!

The entire Bike Path is 22 miles long, and runs along the ocean from Redondo Beach in the south to Santa Monica in the north. The midpoint is the Playa del Rey area.

Here is a map to show the different cities along the way, in case you wanted to extend your ride.

My son, who has done the whole ride, recommends just doing the Venice Beach to Pacific Palisades stretch, including Santa Monica, for most people. Unless you plan to do the entire length, from Pacific Palisades to the South Bay cities of Manhattan and Hermosa Beach.

I believe that in the area of Marina del Rey, the bike path is actually on city streets, not a completely separate bike path. So it won't be as scenic or pleasant, riding along with the cars.

There are bike rentals, public toilets, play equipment and casual cafes all along the route mentioned above.

Pasca, LOL, we sent the same cartoon map!

I still call it biking along the Strand or South Bay Bike path, and probably always will. I guess it's now renamed the Marvin Braude Bike Trail, from the link you sent.
