First time in LA with family - WHERE DO WE STAY?!?!

We have never been to Los Angeles before. We want to show our kids (ages 6 and 8) the beach, Universal Studios, the Hollywood sign, and Disneyland. Also my wife really wants to see Brad Pitt's star on the sidewalk. We are going to be there March 27 - April 3rd. It's so overwhelming looking at the hotel websites. We have budgeted about $150/night for one room for all of us. thanks for the help!!

Hi TravelWFam22 - you might start with something like Orchid Suites in Hollywood - it should match your budget, its quite close to the Walk of Fame (by the way, the best information that I can find online is that Brad Pitt, surprisingly, does not have a star on the Walk of Fame), you'll be able to get good views of the Hollywood sign nearby, and its one stop or a drive of a few minutes to Universal Studios from there.

If you won't have a car, its also a good location as the nearby intersection of Hollywood Blvd. and Highland Ave. is a big public transit and tour bus hub. You can arrange Disneyland transportation from Star Line Tours (www.starlinetours.com) from that area, or there are less expensive ways to go via pubic transit. If you have a car, the drive will be 45-60 minutes to Disneyland from there.

Welcome to TripAdvisor and the Los Angeles forum, TravelWFam22. I think your budget is low. Believe me, I'm in the process of booking a trip to NYC and, even at $200 a night, LA is a bargain compared to it!

You might consider hopping over to the Anaheim forum and looking at hotels there, which tend to be cheaper. Many visitors spend two days at Disneyland and do day trips from there. Orange County (where DL is located) has plenty of beaches. Please rent a car!

You can spend one full day at Universal Studios, then drive over the hill to visit Hollywood (which only takes about 2 hours unless you go to a movie or Ripley's Believe it or Not or something like that). You get a good view of the Hollywood sign from an observation area at the Hollywood and Highland Shopping Center (also a good place to park your car). It is where all the stars are located, too.

Agree with ddffpp. Consider a stay in Anaheim, go to the beach in Orange County. Everything on your current "LA" list is doable in one reasonable day, as they said. You could also visit the Griffith Park Planetarium in the late afternoon.

Perhaps plan another day in the Santa Monica area. Stay off the freeway on weekdays between 7-9:30 am and 3-7 pm. So, if you are in Hollywood or Santa Monica at 3-4 pm, stay longer and have an early dinner. Then get on the road. It'll cut your drive time in half.

Keep in mind that it is very unlikely to be true beach weather during that time.
