Marina del Rey

Am staying at the Jamaica Bay Inn in Marina del Rey in August 2013. Just wondered what people generally think of the area, whether it is safe and any restaurants that they can recommend.

Killer Shrimp is right there. Nearby are many great restaurants in Venice.

Marina del Rey is a nice area, but far away for sightseeing, I assume you'll have a car?

Yes we are having a car during our time there. Also would like to know about Calabasas and Newport Beach and restaurant recommendations for both...

You should not have problems if you follow normal travel precautions: don't flash around cash or jewelry, stay out of alleys and off of dark streets, and avoid Venice Beach boardwalk after 9:00 pm. Otherwise the area is fine.

You will be near Washington Blvd. where there are a good number of restaurants. One that we have favored for 20 years is Szechwan Restaurant.

It is not pretty (very old fashioned Chinese restaurant decor) and I don't think they've remodeled in 15 years, but it's the most authentic Szechwan food you'll get on the westside of LA. Very good kung pao chicken and the soups are excellent. We usually get takeout. They are good at providing everything you need in the bag for a picnic or to eat at the hotel.

The Cheesecake Factory is within easy walking distance of the hotel and has good food and a nice view of the harbor. It is a 'chain restaurant' but I would rate it's food 'very good'.

In the hotel itself is the Beachside Restaurant and Bar which, is also very good but has simple fare.

For something 'a little nicer', consider Cafe del Rey.

Here is a map of these 3 along with the hotel: http://mapq.st/PAarDO

Since this is for a year from now, I'd pick Newport Beach over Calabassas for a stay.

There are also better areas in which to visit LA than MDR. Not close to sightseeing or on the beach.

There is no reason to stay out in Calabasas. It's far away and you'll be in traffic for most of your vacation. Newport is about an hour or so from LA, also in traffic.

Ask about the restaurants closer to your trip.
