Good restaurants near LAX for layover

We will be at LAX in January and have a 4 hour layover before our connecting flight. We figured we have a solid 2 hours before we have to be back at the airport for check-in. What are some good restaurants near or close to LAX? Looking for steak and seafood. Thanks!

How do you plan to get to the restaurant? The minimum taxi fare from LAX is $21 (plus tip) Besides, there's nothing right near the airport in the way of 'good restaurants'. If you venture further away (Manhattan Beach, 15 minutes south) or Marina del Rey or Venice (15 to 20 minutes north), you're looking at $30 or $40 or more in taxi fares, each way. That's $60 to $80 in taxi fares for a meal which will, most likely, disappoint you.

Add to that, taxis don't roam neighborhoods like they do in NY. So, you'll have to call and order a return taxi -- maybe you could arrange that with the driver of the taxi that takes you to the restaurant.

What's your final destination? Be sure to give yourself enough time to go through security and make it to your gate. Have you considered the time it will take to de-plane from a jumbo jet from NY (it could be 20 or 30 minutes) and the walk down the concourse from the gate to the terminal's exit? (That can take another 10 minutes).

And, the time it will take to get to and from the restaurant? 15 or 20 minutes or so, each way? Plus the 'waiting time' for the return taxi? What if your plane departs late from JFK?

You have 4 hours between flights and assume you'll be off the plane and out the temrinal in no time, and have to back 2 hours in advance. What airlines, what terminals? What day of the week and what times? You will, of course, ahve a bit less than 2 hours. And traffic on the airprt road can be heavy. Your checked bags will be tansferred or you'll have them with you? I perosnally wouldn't ruh to grab a taxi to a nearby restaurant, sucha s the Proud Bird. I'd probably just eat at the Encounter Restaurant in the spider-shaped building in the middle of LAX. We had somehwat beter food at some of the local hotels we've stayed at, such as the Radisson and Hilton, but you'd have to take a shuttle to get to those, and the Encounter is great for plane-spotting.

The Proud Bird would be my choice. It's right on the southern runway at LAX.

I would either consider the Daily Grill, a chop house, in the Tom Bradley International Terminal, the famous Encounter Restaurant in the middle of the airport or go to Manhattan Beach. On Rosecrans you have Houston's and McCormick & Schmick's, or Manhattan Beach Blvd by the pier you have The Kettle, Rock 'n Fish, Darren's Restaurant and Petros Greek Cuisine and Lounge, a really great place.

Thanks for your help. This will be on a wednesday and we will arrive at LAX at 11:45 am. It is a domestic flight and we will likely only have 1 small carry on and the rest of the baggage checked. I do not mind paying the taxi fares as it gives us a chance to get out the airport for a bit.

If we do go to Manhattan Beach, how is the traffic to and from at that time of day? Would it be completely ridiculous to venture out there for lunch and to see the beach in that time?

The downtown area of Manhattan Beach is adjacent to the Manhattan Beach Pier which, not surpringly, is 'at the beach' so you could eat and sightsee at the same time. Traffic is as stated in my previous response. Be sure to make arrangements for a return taxi. I just don't know of a restaurant in MB that would be memorable as far as steak or seafood -- just chains or informal 'beach places' which are fine but don't expect fine dining

I would completely disagree, Darren's Restaurant, The Manhattan Beach Post, Petros Greek and Café Pierre, to just name four, are as good as fine dining gets in terms of the quality of the menu.

Beachbum,

Do take a taxi to Manhattan Beach. You can see the ocean and have a walk out on the MB Pier. Happy to say the new Strand House Restaurant, at the base of the pier, is now open for lunch. The Strand (boardwalk) is a 22 mile biking and walking path that runs along the coast.

My favorite steak and seafood restaurant would be Fonz's.

Many more non chain restaurants are located in a few block area around MB Blvd. You might want to check out Rock'N Fish across the street for steak and fish.

For a taxi to return to LAX phone South Bay Yellow Cab. We use them all the time, they are never late.
