Transport LAX Airport to Palm Springs

Can someone please suggest the best way we can get to Palm Springs from LAX other than renting a car. Arrive from Australia 6am and want to be in Palm Springs by about 11am. Is Greyhound an option, reading previous questions it looks as if flying may be the best way, as Greyhound does not pick up at LAX and we would have to get to downtown. Or is there another bus company that can pick up at airport without us fighting our way into LA.

Not having driven on 'the other side of the road' I don't think we want to try it first up out of LA. Much appreciate any suggestions.

Driving or Flying would be the only practical options. Greyhound is located in downtown L.A. so you'd need to transfer to the Greyhound Bus depot on East 7th St and take a bus from there.

If you choose that option, keep in mind that it will take 60 to 90 minutes to de-plane, walk to Immigration (and go through it), walk to baggage claim, walk to customs (and go through it), and exit the terminal. Let's estimate that you'll be 'on the sidewalk' at 7:15 a.m.

You have 2 options for transferring into downtown:

a. A taxi -- about $60 or $70 including tip. Note: there is a 'flat rate' charge of $46.50 offered by taxis between LAX and downtown L.A. but the Greyhound station is located just outside (a 4 or 5 minute walk) from 'downtown' so normal taxi fares apply which are calculated by a meter in the taxi that measures distance as well as the time spent to make the trip. Alternatively, you can ask to be dropped off at the southeast corner of E. 7th St and Alameda St. It's a 4-minute walk from there to the station. Note the route on the map: "A" is the drop off point; "B" is the station: http://mapq.st/ykUuAd Or, possibly, the driver will take you all the way to Greyhound but still charge you the 'flat rate'.

b. The Union Station Flyaway Bus ($10 per person).

A taxi will take 45 minutes (or longer) since you'll be traveling during the morning 'rush hour' (assuming you're arriving on a weekday). That would put you at Greyhound at 8 a.m.

There's a bus to Palm Springs that departs exactly at 8 a.m. which you are unlikely to make. There is another bus at 8:30 a.m. however, if your plane is late in arriving, customs take longer than expected or there is more traffic on the way into downtown (or a traffic accident), you'll miss that bus as well. After 8:30 a.m., the next Greyhound to PS departs at 12:15, arriving at 15:10.

The LAX Flyaway Bus will take even longer since it runs only once every 30 minutes, stops at every terminal on the way to downtown and then lands at Union Station (not Greyhound) from which you'd have to get a taxi to Greyhound. (I do not recommend using the Flyaway given your schedule)

You can hire SuperShuttle to take you LAX for approx $200 one way .

Note that it takes about two hours drive time and you can assume an hour to clear customs,

I would recommend hiring a car. It's pretty much freeway the entire way. If you will be in PS for a while you'll probably want a car anyways.

In your situation, I'd see if I could get any price break on a through plane ticket to Palm Springs. If you want to try driving (and Palm Springs is quite auto-dependent), Palm Springs will be a more forgiving environment than LAX.

I'd suggest renting a car as well. It's a pretty easy 2 hour drive to Palm Springs. We've landed in countries where we have to immediately drive on the other side of the road, and after a few spins around the parking lot, just begin the journey.

It's really the easiest way to get there, and you will want a car in the desert.
