Fun drive from LA to San Diego fast drive back?

Coming to LA in July.

Driving to San Diego mid-week and would welcome any pointers on the drive - what to see, where to stop for a bite... what to avoid? I'd rather have a great drive than "make great time," so be creative!

Best route if we fit in lots of sightseeing and snacks?

Fastest route to get back to LAX to fly home?

Thanks

There's only one way to San Diego from Los Angeles, and that's on the 405. There's a toll road that cuts the trip down by about a half an hour for your return trip to LAX.

If you want to go off the freeway -- it's about a half an hour out of your way but worth visiting -- Laguna Beach for lunch. I also love La Jolla - it's stunningly beautiful and not out of the way.

And should mention in La Jolla - have lunch and visit the San Diego Contemporary Art Museum that's on the coast in La Jolla.

Laguna is filled with resale stores - some great ones.

You could also stop at the San Juan Capistrano Mission if you are into some Ca. history. The 405 freeway merges with the 5 freeway In Orange County so if you go to Laguna Beach it will be from the 5. The misssion is inland from the beach just google it and the site gives directions.

You guys are the best!

I had thought there might be some beach front route southbound to wander a day away and then ZIP back from San Diego to LAX on the freeway?

I have made the drive down from San Francisco and stopped en route at Nepenthe and Big Sur etc. Thought it might be possible southbound from LA a little?

A map I looked at online seemed to have Route 5 or 6 (?) down the coast - via Huntington, Laguna, Dana Point, all the way down. Is that a worthwhile detour or do Angelinos stick to the 405 for sound reasons?

You can get off the 405 freeway at Newport Beach and meander down the more southern coast - visit Balboa Island and Laguna Beach and Dana Point...

Or, closer to Los Angeles, take the coast via Playa Del Rey (Lincoln to Jefferson and turn right), which will take you along the coast via El Segundo, Manhattan, Hermosa and Redondo Beach. You can continue to Palos Verdes and beyond...

Sorry to hi-jack this thread but I'm also heading to San Diego from LA for a day trip (business).

We were planning to go down early in the morining, do the meeting and then head back up to LA.

I was figuring about 2.5 hours for the drive (each way).

Would I be right (providing the traffic is not doo-doo)?

Andy - What day of the week will you be traveling? That makes all the difference - but it's usually about a 3 hour drive, sometimes longer.

If you like losing money, you can always go down the I-15 instead of the I-5.

In Temecula, you can go to the Pechanga Casino, or just south, there is a group of casinos in San Diego County, Pala, Casino Pauma, Harrah's and Valley View. Follow the route, then head south to hook up again with the I-15, which will take you into the Mission Valley area and areas south.

OK so I got hijacked?

Hi Andy...

Are there any suggestions along the coast from LA dowwwwn to San Diego MIDWEEK to eat, to shop, must-see sightseeing??

And in order to catch my flight home on a SATURDAY or SUNDAY, what is the best route and amount of time I should allow to return to LAX from San Diego?

Thanks again.
