San Diego-LA Trip

We are taking our 11 years old son to San Diego and LA this Spring. We planned to fly in and out of SNA. We'll drive down to Rancho Santa Fe and stay there for a few days for Legoland, SD zoo and others, then drive back up to stay close to SNA to visit Universal Studio and LA area for a few more days before flying home. Is this plan workable. As to where to stay, we have some places in mind but haven't made any reservations so any suggestions would be appreciated.

You did not indicate what day you will be in LA. The drive from John Wayne Airport to Hollywood could take 2 hours each way during rush hour. I would stay in Hollywood rather than SNA area.

Thanks for your quick response, Denmarks. We'll be visting Universal Studio on Wednesday or Thursday. Somebody in the other forum mentioned that it's drivable (from Anaheim to Universal Studio) if we try to go in after rush hour on weekdays. The flight home from SNA will be very early (7:00 AM) and that's why we try to stick around that area.

Stay in Hollywood except for the final night when you can stay near SNA.

BTW, is there any chance of changing the airports you are flying into and out of? It seems like you are spending all of your time in San Diego and Hollywood, yet you are flying in and out of SNA.

You can flyi INTO San Diego and OUT OF Burbank (BUR -- Now called Bob Hope International) on Jet Blue for the same price (or less) than you are paying for your current trip. Frankly, the commute from SNA to SD and LA is pretty boring and the traffic can be awful. If you're using frequent flyer miles for this trip, I'd use them for something else.

I live midway between Los Angeles and San Diego, in San Clemente. We are about one hour north of San Diego. SNA is about a 30+ minute drive north of us and L.A. is about an hour and 15 minutes, WITHOUT TRAFFIC which is rare. That means, if you drove from San Diego to L.A. without traffic, it would take at least 2 1/4 hrs each way. Universal City could take even longer since it is in the valley. So...you may want to stay in L.A. for that portion of the trip.
