Getting Tax Back When Leaving US

Hi,

I have heard from people that when leaving the US, if you keep receipts for purchases you can claim something back, which I am assuming is tax paid. But when I have done a search of the internet most websites say that you can't.

Can someone clarify whether this is something you can do and where/how you do it if you can.

Thanks.

You heard wrong, while some European countries do offer a tax rebate for visitors, in the United States, they basically don't offer it. (One US state has a program for sales tax).

Sorry, but the taxes you pay (basically sales, gas and hotel taxes) are non-refundable.

The taxes you pay go for the roads you ride on, police that keep you safe, firefighters that keep you safe and other services that you will use when you are here, so, no, you don't get them back. Think of them as an insurance premium; if you need it ti is there, if you don't, then you had the protection and service. Chuck...

So, that's why the road signs aren't illuminated in Louisiana!

People in the UK keep receipts for taxable goods for HM Customs,as proof that they have paid tax, if they dont believe the tax is paid they will charge us at our own rate of 20%.
