Distance between Santa Monica/Long Beach

Hi

when we come over to see the sights of Hollywood and Los Angeles and Disney at Anaheim, we are considering staying at Santa Monica. Is this the right decision?

The other consideration is that we are picking up a cruise from Long Beach so we do not want to stay too far from there. Any suggestions for a hotel, mid price, at most 200$ per night, preferably with pool?

It depends ... how many nights is your stay in total?

The thing is, Disneyland/Anaheim is kind of far from Hollywood/Santa Monica and closer to the Long Beach harbor.

Well, Disneyland is in Anaheim as you know, so past Long Beach. It's an hour drive from LA. Santa Monica and other beach neighborhoods are closer to Long Beach than central LA and would be about a 35 minute drive without traffic.

You'll be hard-pressed to find anything decent in Santa Monica for under $200 with a pool though (look into Embassy Apts, Cal Mar suites, and Sea Shore motel - all very simple options, but in your price range). You may want to consider Marina del Rey instead if you want to stay in a beach neighborhood (like the Marriott there). It's also a bit closer to Long Beach from there, about 25-30 mins.

Either way, there is really no way to be close to Disneyland, Long Beach and central LA sites. You have to choose what's most important to you. I think staying at one of the beach neighborhoods will be most convenient.

I'm assuming you will have a car? If not, how are you planning to get to Long Beach? If it's by cab, then you definitely want to pick something closer than central LA.

Santa Monica is great, but you won't find anything within your budget. Hotels (with a pool) START at about $250 and up.

SM is one hour from Long Beach, an hour from Anaheim and almost an hour to Hollywood (depending on traffic, it can be as quick as 30 minutes though).

From your other post, you state that you will have a car until the day before you depart on your cruise. I would suggest retaining the car for the last day as public transit to the port is not that great and "shared van" services will take a long while and cost you as much as the car.

Since L.A. is so spread out, think carefully where you want to stay. When you say that you want to see the "sights of Los Angeles", which sights do you mean? Santa Monica is at the western edge of the metro area. If you plan to be visiting some sights in this part of L.A., then Santa Monica is a reasonable place to stay (as long as you can find something in your price range).

If, however, you plan to spend time in central L.A. and downtown L.A., then staying in Santa Monica will require driving across the metro area daily.

You don't indicate your dates of travel -- summer is the most expensive. If we knew when you were traveling, we might be able to recommend hotels in your price range.

Google Maps indicates 35 mins from SM to Long Beach. An hour is a bit of an exaggeration. That's with some serious traffic. I've driven to Long Beach from West Hollywood at 5:30pm and it took me an hour with some traffic.
