Hi all, myself and my brothers are planning a trip from England to California in January, spending a week in LA and a week in either San Diego or San Francisco, can anyone advise me what sort of weather we could expect at that time of year please?

I will be in LA in August but i can tell you it will be much better than England. Did you ever go in Southern Europe?? Some people told me it's the same more or less.
There are many, many websites that offer year-round descriptions of climate. Here's one:
wordtravels.com/Travelguide/…Climate
Weather can be unpredictable, however. So, I recommend going to WEATHER.COM about 1-week before your departure, typing in the city names and then clicking on the word MONTH on the next page. "Month" can be found just a little bit below the center of that page and a little bit to the left of center. (Look hard and you'll find it). Clicking on it will give you a forecast for that month.
You can also click on the adjacent "Averages & Records" which will give you historical data (like the first link, above).
In general, we recommend bringing layers of light and medium-weight clothes rather than heavy clothes since the termperature can change within the course of a day. And don't forget your umbrella!
Weather will deffinatly better than in the UK at that time of the year
