beach hotel for one night close to LAX

We are a family of four visiting West from U.K. in August for 3 weeks. The day before we fly home we will take an internal flight from Grand Canyon to LAX. We don't want to take another car for one day. Can anyone recommend a hotel close to one of the beaches and LAX? We will arrive on 24th at LAX approx. 4.30 and need to fly out on 25th at 21.20. Also, any ideas of taxi fares to suggested beach resort? Thanks.

Manhattan Beach is a small "beach town" 10 minutes south of LAX. Santa Monica is a large beach city north of LAX.

Manhattan Beach will have short buildings, little shops and people walking barefoot, carrying their surfboards.

Santa Monica has high-rise office and apartment buildings, shopping malls, and people wearing business attire on their way to work

Here are links to hotels in both areas:

Taxi fares are calclulated by the distance of a trip as well as how long it takes to get there. For example, if you are riding during a "high traffic" period, then any time the taxi is standing still, there is a surcharge. Friday, in the late afternoon, is the worst time of the week as far as traffic is concerned. Here is the calculation for the taxi rides to the 2 above destinations:

1. TO MANHATTAN BEACH:

$2.65 (initial charge when you get into the taxi) +

$2.50 (surcharge for all trips originating at LAX +

$2.45 x 5 miles (distance to Manhattan Beach) +

44 cents per mimute of waiting time x 10 minutes (estimated) +

15 percent tip =

$28 (approximately)

2. TO SANTA MONICA:

$2.65 (initial charge when you get into the taxi) +

$2.50 (surcharge for all trips originating at LAX +

$2.45 x 13 miles (distance to Santa Monica) ±+

44 cents per mimute of waiting time x 20 minutes (estimated) +

15 percent tip =

$53 (approximately)

Thanks for the prompt reply_ as an expert which would you recommend for our last day? Obviously, they both sound very different.

Manhattan Beach is located 3 miles south of LAX. You will get a taste of a typical SoCal beach town for your overnight stay. We take taxi's to and from LAX all the time, and the fare runs us about $15, plus tip, on weekends. You will have no traffic returning to the airport on Saturday night from MB for your flight home.

I always suggest the Marriott Residence Inn with a family, as they have an evening snack and full morning breakfast included in the rate.

It's almost a straight shot to the town pier, where all the shops and restaurants are located, as well as bike path, strand for walking, etc.

Since most hotels have a noon check out, are you going to make arrangements to stay in your room longer, since you have a late flight?

Thanks for recommendation- will have a look at rates and reviews- as for keeping room longer- is this normally acceptable? In the U.K. we would probably just expect luggage storage, but having said that we will probably need a quick shower before setting off for LAX.

You can also consider the Inn at Playa del Rey. Playa is only 5 to 10 mins. to the airport. It's walking distance to the beach, they have bikes you can borrow and breakfast is included. It's so lovely and peaceful.

We were just in the UK a couple weeks ago, and know they accept luggage storage before check in, and perhaps after. Usually, in the States, you can ask for a later check out of 2-3 hours at a chain hotel. However, in August, the hotels along the coast will probably be full on a weekend. If you really want that shower, and maybe a short rest before your 9:20pm flight, you might book a second night, even though you wouldn't use it fully.

Another, less expensive hotel, almost across the street, is the Hawthorn Suites, ranked #4 in town, and for a short stay would be fine for your family of four.

Thanks for your suggestions- have looked at Residence Inn and that seems perfect for us. However, I do think we'll need that shower- is there any kind of facility by pool or fitness area, do you know? I know it probably sounds mean, but to book an extra night seems a bit of an extravagance when we won't be staying. If we do stay trere or somewhere else, is luggage storage the norm. in USA as we will definitely need that?

At the base of the Manhattan Beach pier, there are restrooms with showers, but that only helps, if you have a rental car, with your luggage locked in the trunk.

No, there is not an area at the Residence Inn for you to clean up in at the pool. Like most hotels, they expect people will go back to their rooms after using the swimming pool during their stay. It would be expensive to pay for an extra night there, I understand that. Too bad your flight isn't earlier by about six hours. It makes it a long day to keep busy without cleaning up.

The only other thing I can suggest, is to make reservations for the cheapest room at the Hawthorn for Sat. night. At noon on Saturday, check out of MRI, and roll your suitcases down the block and check in there. You could store your luggage in the room, not care if it only had one bed, and take turns using the shower. At leas the family could watch TV while they waited in the evening for the taxi.

I suggest checking into reservations asap. Manhattan Beach is very popular in the summer, and there are not that many places to stay, and both hotels may already be booked up by now.

Don't want you to be misled, there are no hotels on the beach , or even close, in Manhattan Beach--all the suggestions are at least a mile from the beach, in a kind of office park area. The closest would be the Inn at Playa del Rey in terms of beach access & close to airport--they might have airport pick-up service. Most hotels will hold your luggage for you after check-out, I've never stayed anywhere that wouldn't. So you can explore before you have to head to airport. Also, one beach south from MB is Hermosa Beach, which is fun. There is a boardwalk, "The Strand" that links MB, HB, Playa del Rey, etc, all the way from Redondo Beach (further south) to Venice (further north). You can walk along it & pop up the hill to the towns full of shops, cafes, etc. Might be a nice long stroll before a long cramped plane ride back home!

Also, one more thing about the Inn at PDR. It is a small, privately owned place, and they might help you out in regards to the shower situation more than a large chain hotel would...just a thought!
